We're obviously expected to settle down for the long haul until this 'core' is repaired, so...what's the job market like? How many hoops are new arrivals like us expected to jump through in order to get a job? That sort of thing would be a good place to start.

Not much. You'll want to get a job workin' for a fellow Newcomer, because that'll give you less grief. But you look normal enough, so you could pass for a person who lives here-- look, here's a tip, don't let anybody who ain't a Newcomer know you're one. They don't like us.
