Today marked the first day in Nieman et al. v Afterglow, Incorporated, the lawsuit that could bring an end to the system of slavery in Siren's Port.
The case is represented by Newcomers Diego Armando and Miles Edgeworth on behalf of the plaintiffs and attorneys Umberto diGrazzi, Irina Smith, and P. R. Wimbledon, III, representing AGI.
Betting pools have long favored AGI in this case, and it's not difficult to see why. The attorneys for the defendants put up a magnificent showing. Yet it's the underdog plaintiff who may well have showed the stronger case.
Perhaps the most exciting testimony came from AGI rising star Shikamaru Nara, a Newcomer who was called as a hostile witness for the plaintiffs. Midway through the testimony, he reached the breaking point and began confessing everything he'd seen and heard as a slave-catcher for AGI. When it came time for cross-examination, AGI's attorneys had to treat him as hostile, but they weren't able to undo the damage.
Other remarkable testimony came from Newcomers Sirius Black and Jack Kelly, who described their experiences being sold into slavery without so much as a trial, as well as Drs. Tenma and Yumeno, who talked about the mistreatment they'd seen tending to AGI's slaves. The plaintiffs moved through their entire case, and moved to have the jury deliberate, but it was AGI's motion to adjourn to next Tuesday that the judge ultimately upheld.
Legal scholar Hicks Zamboni, however, believes that the follow-up hearing is just delaying the inevitable for AGI. "As far as I see it, the case was concluded when the judge approved the pretrial motion to admit testimony from the slaves," he explains. AGI "didn't fight too hard against the motion, because they were planning favorable testimony from their own witnesses," and they were "most likely confident in their own abilities to intimidate whatever slaves were called to the stand." Yet ultimately, Mr. Armando and Mr. Edgeworth called only one currently enslaved person to the stand, in contrast to AGI's three. "By old law, only free men were legally allowed to testify in court. The judge, by admitting this testimony, is treating the slaves as people with legal rights. And his ruling is going to have to be consistent with that, you bet your patootie."
The next hearing is scheduled for Monday, June 27th.

-NEW LOOK IN MENSWEAR
This brief article in the Style section of the newspaper notes some of the fashions not only at Tuesday's porn-society wedding, but also some of the more stylish looks at the trial. The fashion with the highest marks? The cool look that newcomer Diego Armando was sporting as he walked into that courtroom, cute assistant Maya Fey on his arm. Expect to see hipster glasses, white canes, and coffee mugs making a comeback in a big way.
- BLURS RUIN CROPS, DESTROY FAMILY BARN
A short article is littered with very..."unique" quotes from a local farmer expressing anger and indignation toward what he describes as "colorful blurs comin’ right outta the sky." These blurs apparently attacked his farmstead sometime very early Wednesday morning, leaving a line of destruction through one field and knocking out portions of the walls and roofs of two tool sheds and a barn. While no people or livestock were harmed in the attack, the farmer has "sworn revenge" for the destruction of his property, as well as for "emotional damages." While there’s some speculation that the blurs may have been members of the powered population within the city, without a more accurate description of the perpetrators an official investigation will likely not be held.
- MURDER IN THE UNDERGROUND MALL?
Mall Security was alerted to the death of an old man by an anonymous caller last night at 10pm. A young and shaken male voice explained in a hasty message: "Guy's on a bench outside Sparks Casino. I think he had a heart attack or something- I swear, I swear, I had no idea that it would- I...I gotta go. I think he's dead. I'm so sorry. Anybody looking for him's gonna be looking for a much younger guy. His hair was blonde, ah- I gotta go."
Sure enough, security found a white-haired elderly man in a leather vest popular among city youth. Cause of death was determined to be cardiac arrest, but the coroner checked the bar of chocolate on his person for any traces of poison. Sparks Casino has refused to release security footage without a warrant, insisting the man simply died of old age. The body has not yet been identified, and police are asking anyone with further information to come forward.
