It's closer to a drug--a short period of induced happiness, followed by a hollow feeling afterwards.

It goes deeper than that. The desire for hunger can be suppressed, can be curtailed.

Humans never stop desiring happiness, even if they've forgotten what truly makes them happy. They destroy themselves hunting.

Happiness can become a curse. [Oh. He knows. All too well. It's rather profitable, really!]

It always has been.

Not many realize it.

If you refuse to answer a simple question regarding the state of whether you are ever happy or not, either you do, at times, feel happiness, or you are more often than not filled with the lingering hollow feeling you described earlier.

If happiness is a curse, or inevitably results in one, then it is a logical inquiry to make.
