My ward. He is a beast whose nature was rent asunder by the hands of man.

A name must be given that embodies the person and must come from the soul. Their core being.

You know him best? Then, the name you call him in your heart will suffice.

I do not call him by any name at all. I have never understood the importance of names.

My people tend to pick a new name or have one gifted to them once they reach puberty or early adulthood. It tends to describe us.

My son, for instance, can run extremely fast - so fast he cannot be seen. His hair is white, but can look like metal in the bright sunlight. So he is called 'Quicksilver'.

A suitable name, this. Your offspring is in this place as well?

Fortunately not. Or else we'd have sudden twister outbreaks when ever he got bored. [So. Very. Amused.]

[ Bemused. ]

He has done this often, by your telling?

...

[At first he'd only listened to it, before glancing back over to skip it. Her wording had seemed strange. Foreign, perhaps. Clearly sheltered. Then he'd seen her.]

[WAS THAT A HORSE?!]

[It was only after glancing over the other comments that he realised. Unicorn? He really was in a video game or something, wasn't he?]

[He cleared his throat before replying. It was very hard to keep the wonder from his voice.]

It can be either inspiration or whim. Sometimes people name things after other things that are important to them. Sometimes they look up the meaning of the name to choose a name that fits. And sometimes they just pick a name that sounds good to them.

And what of yourself? [ She's heard that tone of wonder before. Curious, she regards the image on the mirror of her NV. ]

To me, the way someone reacts to the name is the most important part of it.

I-- [She was talking about him, right?] didn't meant to end up on the tree. Trees.

[ Yes, yes she was. ]

Perhaps not, but regardless of your intent, it was your ultimate destination. You are no longer in trees now?

[Embarrassed.]

No, that-- power, went away. So I can actually walk around without needing to climb down, now.

Are you more at ease now, then?

[Uhhhh, okay, it's a talking horse of some sort. Even more things could talk here than back home; it's somewhat disconcerting.]

Sometimes we named them after other things, I guess...?

[ D: That's right you BETTER not say that out loud, buddy. ]

There is purpose in naming them after things that already possess names?

It reminds you of the first thing. I guess it's kind of an honor.

Have you bestowed such an honor on a creature in this place?
