My people tend to pick a new name or have one gifted to them once they reach puberty or early adulthood. It tends to describe us.
My son, for instance, can run extremely fast - so fast he cannot be seen. His hair is white, but can look like metal in the bright sunlight. So he is called 'Quicksilver'.
[At first he'd only listened to it, before glancing back over to skip it. Her wording had seemed strange. Foreign, perhaps. Clearly sheltered. Then he'd seen her.]
[It was only after glancing over the other comments that he realised. Unicorn? He really was in a video game or something, wasn't he?]
[He cleared his throat before replying. It was very hard to keep the wonder from his voice.]
It can be either inspiration or whim. Sometimes people name things after other things that are important to them. Sometimes they look up the meaning of the name to choose a name that fits. And sometimes they just pick a name that sounds good to them.
