[ Lady Shinymane does not often announce her presence on this thing, tending to leave it to her human counterpart. But it was a nice night, and there was a question to be asked. Two, technically ( Read more... )

[At first he'd only listened to it, before glancing back over to skip it. Her wording had seemed strange. Foreign, perhaps. Clearly sheltered. Then he'd seen her.]

[WAS THAT A HORSE?!]

[It was only after glancing over the other comments that he realised. Unicorn? He really was in a video game or something, wasn't he?]

[He cleared his throat before replying. It was very hard to keep the wonder from his voice.]

It can be either inspiration or whim. Sometimes people name things after other things that are important to them. Sometimes they look up the meaning of the name to choose a name that fits. And sometimes they just pick a name that sounds good to them.

And what of yourself? [ She's heard that tone of wonder before. Curious, she regards the image on the mirror of her NV. ]

To me, the way someone reacts to the name is the most important part of it.

Are not names often given when one is first born?

It depends. For children, usually, but the names have to be something that people won't react badly to. For instance I know that in Germany the name "Adolf" is no longer as popular as it was a few decades back. That's because someone who held that name did some pretty terrible things and now it's associated with bad things.

For pets, they can be renamed at any time as long as they're trained to obey the name. And people often take on stage or pen names when they're singers or writers.

[ A pause. ]

It is strange that such a simple concept can be made so complicated. [ It's only a name - but she doesn't understand feelings, so she wouldn't understand why people would want to avoid things like that. ]

It doesn't have to be. If you want to name something without the complexities, just find a name you like and give it to him.

Such is easier said than done. I do not "like" things as others do. A name is merely a name.

Then just pick at random. If it doesn't matter to you, then just choose the first name that comes into your mind.

It does not matter to me, but it matters to my companion. He is quite indecisive.

Reading is not an ability I possess, I fear.

[ Hrm. Molly? No. Schmendrick? ...No. Lir? .......... no. ]

I have few friends. Those whose names I know, would not suit for this one. Do not fear, another has suggested a name of David, from a story he has once heard. I do not know if my charge will claim it as his own, however.

David... it's an interesting name to choose. How will you know if he takes to it? Can he talk?
