009: Powerless in the Face of Turnabout - Video

[Phoenix is sitting at a desk looking a little better now that his liver is starting to recover. His eyes are brighter than they've been in weeks, and he's smiling.]

So... It's been a long week, and I was thinking last night that everyone's been going through a lot of changes recently. Somehow I've managed to avoid that, maybe because I didn't have ( Read more... )

[She's still got handcuffs on, but she's working on some hand sewing.]

In my world, we've had problems with this most definitely. I will never register my powers. Ever. I wouldn't even admit to having powers. That's a slippery slope.

We're already distancing ourselves from the population as it is, without making it worse. Everyone has powers here, so surely there's nothing to be afraid of?

What happened in your world?

In my world? [She puts down the sewing.]

Mutants, people with powers, are hated and feared. In some places, they're actually hunted. We don't have the same civil rights as normal humans, because the law doesn't consider us human. If crimes happen to mutants, no one cares until the flatscans are injured. If a crime happens and a mutant is anywhere near? They're immediately accused of the crime even if they were just trying to help.

We're still the marginalized people here. You think it's going to be any different here?

It probably isn't... I guess I never thought of it that way. The thing is...without proper identities, we can't stop them abducting us, experimenting on us, selling us off as slaves with fake identities. We're in just as much danger.

What if powers were kept on record, but remain undisclosed?

You want to make it ~easy~ for people to round us up, is that it?

That's not it at all. In fact it's the total opposite. If people wanted to round us up, they already have ways to do that, and right now they can make us disappear without anyone ever knowing it.

My friends would notice if I'd gone.

[ Grell is, admittedly, using the word "friend" rather loosely! ]

Not everyone here has friends, and people who have just arrived even less so.

[Oh god it's the start of the Mutant Civil War all over again.]

Names and ages I don't think is bad. But what would be the point of registering powers?

[He does noooot want to be thrown in jail again.]

Well... I suppose there's not much point, really. Would you be interested so long as it didn't pry?

Interested in registering what my powers are? And what does 'as long as it doesn't pry' mean exactly? [Does not sound very impressed.]

Interested in registering your identity, more like. The same way everyone else on this island has an identity. Weren't you asked for it when you were employed?

Register powers so natives can know our weaknesses?

Most wise counsel.

Why do you think I'm asking about it. You know that a lot of professionals here are quizzed about their powers already, don't you?

By natives, which should be expected and avoided. Putting ourselves on a spit over a prepared fire seems a bit stupid, however.

Avoided? Isn't that overly suspicious? Anyone's powers on this island could hurt people, newcomer or not.

I think registering powers would be a terrible idea. The companies already have the power to meddle with the law. A list of everyone's powers would let them handpick whoever would be most useful to them.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that any list of powers was e-mailed straight to them, and it was only a thought. It is risky, though, keeping that kind of information anywhere. Nothing is really safe.

E-mailed? What is that?

Better to stick to things like names. Perhaps a name with a photograph and the day the person arrived here?

Uh...e-mail. Like sending documents through the NV, or a computer.

I'm not even sure the day we arrived here is important. It would set us apart from natives having that extra bit of information there, wouldn't it? A name, a photograph... Do we need more than that?
