I loved this episode!!!!!! This is one of my favorite episodes ever!
Little Ben! Little Ben! Little Ben!!!!
Little Ben is my favorite. I love, absolutely love, seeing Ben's past. But I always love stories that show how people develop into the adults they become, and how our pasts influence us but it's still our choices that make us who we are.
That being said, I still want nothing more than to beat the crap out of Ben's father and give little Ben a hug. I think he really could have used one. I wish that Sayid could have tried to reform Ben, to help him find a better life instead of just killing him. But that wouldn't have been accurate characterization for Sayid. I knew last week Sayid was going to try to kill Ben. It still made me sad. Of course, he isn't going to die. No way.
The other reason this episode rocked is of course Sawyer. Oh Sawyer, I love you so much! And I am officially 100% in the Sawyer/Juliet camp now. When Juliet was looking out the window and saw Kate and Jack, the look in Sawyer's eyes just broke my heart! And then Juliet said "this is over" and I almost started screaming "if you break him, I am going to kill you, Juliet." The thing is, I was a Sawyer/Kate person because I loved Sawyer and I loved angsty Sawyer. But I never liked Kate. I do like Juliet, and now I like them together. In every moment, Sawyer was amazing in this ep! I love that you can see him trying his hardest to protect and care for his friends. He actually cares. He's come so far in his characterization.
I really don't think I could like an episode better than this. Angsty!Little Ben. Angsty!Adorable!Sawyer. Perfect. Okay, I could have used a few more answers. I like answer episodes, but for making my heart clench and rewatchability, this episode was the best.
*Edited after reading the discussion on the LOST group*
I have to steal someone's comment. "Lying to little!Ben! That's not fair. He's crying and everything." Totally agree with that one. Poor little!Ben. I wanted to hug him so much. Sayid, you have no heart. Okay, Big!Ben broke you, but he's not that man yet.
And the big question is "Would big!Ben have become big!Ben if Sayid hadn't shot him and had just taken him to Richard?" Maybe he wouldn't have had so many trust issues and wouldn't have felt the need to be in control of everything in his life? Of course there is something to be said for natural temperament. Someone else might have responded differently.
Which makes me still wonder why Richard made him wait before taking him anyway. Did Richard have the master plan all the way back then? It seems kind of cruel if he left little!Ben suffering simply to carry out the plan. But we need to know a LOT more about Richard to truly answer this question. Richard is the big mystery that I still want to know more about.
