Because I am entirely unwilling to post on any Audioscrobbler board (I refuse to call it Last.fm), I'm posting this little meme here. Actually, I'm putting off doing something else, but this is more fun. You even get a free mp3 in here if you read it all the way through. (Or skim it for the link, if you're lazy and only in it for the music. Traitor.)
Post your top ten bands/artists, the first song you heard of theirs, the song that made you fall in love, and your current favorite.
1. Therion - I believe the first song, according to an old mix, was Black Sun. The song that made me fall in love however, was any given song on Secret of the Runes, minus Ginnungagap. (I'm sorry, Christofer, I love you--but that track does not fit on the album.) My current favourite is Via Nocturna. It's all over the place, changes every two minutes or less, and ends only to allow a cover of O Fortuna begin. That, my friends, is true bliss.
2. Rammstein - Although I'm not as proud of liking this band as I am most of my collection, I love this band. And listen to them a lot. The first song I heard of theirs... I think it was Sonne. No. It was Du Hast, like everyone else, except I didn't hear it from the Matrix soundtrack. I was too cool to listen to the Matrix soundtrack (heh). I think I had seen their name somewhere and downloaded a random song, which just so happened to be Du Hast. This song was, indeed, the beginning of a beautiful, who-knows-how-many-years-long love affair with the German language. The song that made me fall in love, though, was probably Sonne. My favourite song right now is Zerstören.
3. Clan of Xymox - First song: A remix by somebody of The Same Dream. First original work: I Want You Now. Song that made me fall: I Want You Now. Current Favourite: Wailing Wall.
4. Dead Can Dance - This should be easy. The first was, without a doubt, Severance. It's a slow song, so I didn't take to it easily, and didn't like the band at first. The song that made me fall in love is the live version of Rakim. (Ahh, heaven.) Current favourite is Bird.
5. Opeth - Yay. This one is easy. First song: Face of Melinda. Fell in love: Harvest. Current favourite: Beneath the Mire.
6. Faith and the Muse - According to a mix from 2003, the first was Elyria. (This was back when I didn't get full albums and made a mix from all the random music I downloaded that week.) The song that made me fall in love was Sredni Vashtar. My favourite now is Cernunnos--has a very dark, industrial sound to it, which I love. (
Here, if anyone wants it. And you know you do.) The lyrics are incredibly strong to me, and, if I'm interpreting them correctly, it's God deciding to rid himself of responsibility over humans who obviously don't appreciate him. Or it could be just about a king who lost control of his kingdom. Either way: Love love love. This could be my favourite song of all time.
7. Nine Inch Nails - All right. This one is slightly embarassing. But come on, The Downward Spiral is good! I really don't know what song was the first, though. I was a major industrial fan for quite some time, but listened to NIN after I had already been listening to Front Line Assembly and Suicide Commando. NIN kind of seemed like a watered down pop-version of industrial, but after listening a few times decided that Trent was an okay musician in his own right.
Oh. Yeah, I remember now. The first song was Terrible Lie. Because I had heard Weird-Al's song Germs. Or it might have been Closer, on the radio, but didn't know it was NIN at the time (nor did I care). The song that made me fall in love was more than likely Star-Fuckers Inc. No! It was At the Heart of it All, because it actually sounded industrial enough for my taste. But, yeah. After a while I quit being a pretentious rivethead.
The one that really did it for me, though, and got me to listen more, was Reptile.
Right now my favourite is... probably still Reptile.
8. ThouShaltNot - I found these guys on mp3.com about three-four years ago. The first song was Without Faith, which I listened to whilst laying in bed and gazing at the ceiling, riding a wave of euphoria from the music toward the end of the song. That was what made me fall. Right now, their best song is probably The Greater Good.
9. Nightwish - I was hoping I'd get to write about these guys. The first song was... let me look. According to two sources, it was The Siren. That was also the one that included them as a staple in my music diet. My favourite is Moondance. It reminds me of Ensiferum, and I like to yell 'Hey!' and throw my arms up when that part comes. I'm easily amused.
10. In Flames - First song was Artifacts of the Black Rain. This was back when I was first getting into metal, with the help and guidance of a friend (now my best friend). I went out and bought The Jester Race (my first metal album!) after hearing Jester's Dance, the song that made me fall in love. I have a bunch of favourites, and I actually listen to these guys more than anyone at this point. (Love was revived when their new album came out.) If I have to go with one song, then it'd have to be Resin.
