Question for any of you:
Ever had someone smile condescendingly to you and then say that you're cute when you're mad?
Ever had someone interrupt your opinionated discourse to say that you talk too much?
Ever had those same people get angry at you for pointing out that you don't like being interrupted that way: that it makes you feel that you are not being taken seriously?
"But I'm only TEASING you!" Grrrr... Don't you CARE what I have to say at all?
Its like, I hate awkward silences. I hate them. I however know all too well that there are those special, intimate or socially expected situations where silence is golden. I really do.
But when you are :
a) passionate about something, and you wish to share it with others
b) giving your opinion about an issue that is important to you
c) recounting an anecdote in an attempt to amuse those around you
It is rude and impolite to change the subject by interrupting you and then so eloquently pointing out that you "talk too much" or that you're "cute when you explain things". What the hell?
Sure, some people don't know WHEN to shut up. We ALL have that one friend. Or those people who bring up INAPPROPRIATE and sometimes AWKWARD topics of conversation. But there are polite, eloquent ways of changing the subject or pointing out that one is rambling and being annoying.
Sure, some say that "But, some people don't take the hint! You HAVE to be blunt and rude to them". Okay. I know people like that. But I, personally, CAN take a hint. I know when to shut up. The problem is, no one is so kind as to point it out first before slamming me with a condescending jibe.
I'm known for taking things too seriously, so part of the problem is my own. But Christ, I like to think that other people take ME seriously once in a while. If what I say bugs or annoys you, then PLEASE, point out that my discourse is inappropriate. Please. I find that a lot more respectful than wry smiles and condescension.
There's no reason to treat me like a child. It is NOT cute anymore. I am an adult with points of view and opinions that matter to me.
I think I know what many women must feel like when someone points out how "cute" they are when they are mad, completely bypassing whatever the person was expressing.
