Three things we learned yesterday

Jul 29, 2013 12:49

1.) Beef Stand is, at least sometimes, closed on Sunday
2.) Don't get anything besides the hamburgers and fries at Murphy's, food-wise.
3.) Pu-erh tea has quite a bit of caffeine.

I started on my kegerator collar. Finally.

So far I have taken care of:
- Defrost, unplug freezer
= Clean out freezer, seriously
- Remove lid (without breaking any fingers, check)
- Take measurements
- Measure again
- Get wooden planks
- Cut wooden planks to size
- Recut planks that were too big
- Spray wooden planks with urethane spray (waterproofing)
- Remove the gasket, be horrified at the little mummified bug eggs in it, soak it in bleach overnight and scrub it clean
- another coat of urethane, on top

What I still need to do is:
- find 1/4 inch thick pieces of wood to bridge to the hinges
- Sand down edges of wood pieces
- Get roughly a million (okay, 30-60) L brackets if attaching the wood that way
- Use L brackets to attach at corners of 4 wood pieces
- Seal both the bottom of the freezer and the wood join with silicone
- Re-attach gasket, this time to the wood collar
- Get rigid foam insulation; cut it to size; attach to interior of collar.

Then, after attaching the collar and putting the lid back on:
- drill holes for taps
- drill hole for temperature probe
- decide on mounting temperature probe and gas manifold to the wood collar itself

This project has so far been both easier and more enjoyable than expected based on people internet descriptions. Granted, I'm not finished. Maybe it's just the satisfaction of finally getting this thing done that I have thought about and hemmed and hawed on for so very long.

Jill pointed out that it could be decorated like a massive treasure chest or a dangerous animal transport box. Neat ideas, might work. Gotta get the base construction done first though.

It's also time to get our diet back under control. For this week, I made sort of quiche-like thing and a loaf of bread so far. And more smoothies. Right now I am trying to focus on using things up, and on eating better than we have been. Which shouldn't be an especially difficult bar to hit, all things considered. I have less of a paleo diet in mind and more of a .. peasanto? Something like that.

Before I started compulsing for serious yesterday, I also beat a couple mini-bosses in Dark Souls who had been giving me trouble. It turns out that crossbows are really quite good in that game, especially when upgraded to +5.

.. leading to some of my sudden shifts in milieu when considering games. Looking through my unused game shelf brought me across the WHFRP book, which I am not terribly interested in using for the base setting but could be really fun for a Ravenloft-type game.

GenCon kinda put an exclamation mark after my usual indecision, because there's a limited amount of time and therefore I have to actually make some decisions and prioritize. Thus the pace of ideas being knocked in (and out) of my mind increases.

I've pretty much given up on getting into most of the games, though, which takes some of the pressure off. Planning for next year will be a huge headache I'm sure, but that's a problem for future ken.

to do, beer, rpgs, food, recap
