A little town under the streets

There is this little part in Baldur's Gate II. Most people who played the game probably don't remember it. It's an optional area of an optional quest. Under the streets of the capital city, you can find a circus tent-type thing filled with undead. Most of them are more intelligent, like ghouls and mummies. They even have a mayor. They're living together, trying to eke out an existence away from the humans above.

When your character goes there, he or she smells like food - as a living person - and sends them into a hunger frenzy, and they all attack you. The first time I played through the area, I reloaded to an earlier save because I felt so bad about disrupting their little undead community.

It's just a neat little detail in the game that suggests a bunch of stories or possibilities without specifying them. I'd still like to know how all those undead got there, though.. cast-offs from a necromancer? Undead that eventually grew tired of their endless hunger and tried to find another way?

Also, Goblin, of all the cats, has curled up against my leg and gone to sleep (while purring loudly) while I was reading "Tome of the Undergates." Which may be the fantasy-ist title, but is pretty enjoyable to read.

stories, books
