Was out at the Rifle Range on Saturday, did a bit of painting to get the place spruced up for the GTA's next week.

After everyone left i went with Diode and Loop to have a look at the Choccy Goldmine. Diode wants to abseil into the second outfall which noone has yet explored. On the way out we stopped at the shaft where the fella Aaron died. He stepped thru the shaft's open door (how it was open God knows, it looks like its been welded shut for donkeys) and fell 30-40 metres into the abandoned sewer tunnel below.

The shaft is now a memorial shrine, with a peice, dozens of stories and poems written on its walls in spray and pen, photos, flowers and bottles of booze. Seems the dudes 22nd birthday was a week or so back.

The thing that got me was the realization of the fact that the poor bloke had no idea what happened to him. Before we went down the Goldmine in 2001 we had no idea what it was. Once down there we were aware, but nevertheless took that awareness for granted. As he fell down that dark smelly shaft, to land in seeping ground water running across the floor of a 102 year old abandoned sewer outfall, he'd have had no idea what was happening to him.

I dunno if that makes it worse or better.
