It seems a lot of people seemed to think that Uther's flirting was out of character. But in the very first episode he did the same thing. And, you know, got burnt for it, but when have they ever learned. He's a flirt basically, the way a lot of men in power are. And it's been like 20 years from when Igraine died. We shouldn't forget that the idea of 'one true love' is a construct and though it's okay to play on it in fiction it is also always okay to depict relationships more realistically. Plus it was apparent he had certain boundaries that he was not willing to cross yet, that flirting was one thing, but actually doing something was another. I don't think he was over the top at all. And I loved how he dismissed Gaius' warnings to his face and was intimidating and kingly and 'it is not thy place to disparage my guests' but then went on and was all secretly suspicious. I mean right before he was enchanted he was about to heed Gaius' warnings and send the woman away. It's more than Arthur's ever done. Arthur only sort of listens to Merlin when he doesn't like the guy either. And when has Merlin ever been wrong?
I liked the parallels between Gaius/Uther and Merlin/Arthur. Merlin was all 'I told you s...' and then in the end went to talk with his guy, but failed as well.
Some people thought Gaius telling Merlin to use magic in front of Uther was out of character. I didn't think so. He's always been cause=magic=>use magic, cause=nonmagic=>don't use magic. And careful about jumping to conclusions. Plus, as we saw in the preview, having Uther under the control of a troll has some serious consequences that Gaius could predict.
I've said it before and I'm gonna say it again until I get my gif of naked Arthur-Merlin's mind going to the gutter, I want it! You know, the scene with Catrina where she mentions undressing and Colin Morgan makes that face which I watched embarrassingly many times.
ETA:
Not only do we have Arthur half-naked, they've started to make him smile at Merlin in the most adorable ways. And let me say that Bradley James has a dazzling smile! We've not seen much of it yet, so it's like a sucker punch. Whoa! 'Love a man who smiles. Colin Morgan's is also ravishing, but he smiles full on teeth all the time, so I've developed a bit of an immunity.
My favourite couple for this episode was Merlin/Gaius. I laughed out loud, when Gaius sings after Merlin, when he goes to see Arthur. Mer-LIN. I think it's ~ major sixth or something.
