Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks are coming to Tucson! On January 9th I will be sneaking into Plush to drink Coronas and watch Stephen Malkmus (and Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney) tear it up. I'm not sure if they're going to Phoenix, but if they are I'll probably be there, too ( Read more... )

The internet is a strange place. Here I am in Tucson -- well, almost -- noodling about in LJ and checking my Gmail when my "Stephen Malkmus" alert brings me to your entry. I'm so, so, so excited!!! Sometimes I forget to check the Plush website, so getting the news early is especially welcome.

I wish I could have seen The Rapture. But it was impossible with my work and domestic obligations.

Obviously. But it wasn't a night that I could get back at 2:30am and still have the energy required for Friday's calendar. I do make the trip up I-10 and back. I don't even mind the drive. The problem is that when I get back that late I have a hard time falling asleep and don't drift off until 4am or do.

I was at that show. It was great. I love Solar Culture for the well-ordered anarchy and the train whistles too. Mind if I add you? I might learn about something I should be doing up there or even down here.

yes i do mind. you may be a really nice guy, but this is the internet, and im a little uncomfortable at the thought that some guy ive never met before is reading my livejournal just because i wrote "stephen malkmus" and he was somehow told about it. no offense, but im going to make this friends-only now.

Well, then. I guess this counts as a "lesson learned" for you. If you don't want people you don't know to read your blog entries, you need to make them "Friends Only." Seems pretty obvious to me, but I've been using the internet for a long time. Anyway, best of luck with your quest for privacy.

well, i tried to be nice, but exactly where do you think that you have the right to visit a complete stranger's page, leave a message, and then get angry at said person for feeling uncomfortable. and don't try to make me out to be the dumb guy here. you see how i mentioned in my above comment that i was making this friends only? wouldnt that give you the impression that i knew what the fuck friends only was, and that i had the physical and mental capabilities required to make my livejournal friends only ( ... )

I'm sorry if I gave you the impression I was angry, because I wasn't. It sounds like you are, though -- you're the one stating "you have no fuckign right" -- so let me clarify. I knew you understood what "Friends Only" meant. But I was perplexed -- and remain so -- by the fact that you were surprised that someone you didn't know had discovered your entry and commented on it. It happens to me fairly regularly. Sometimes I wish it didn't, but I recognize that it's the price I pay for having public entries. At any rate, what I was trying to convey to you with that "lesson learned" comment was that you need to make your entries "Friends Only" to avoid turning up in search engines, which is, after all, how I found you in the first place. I should also mention, in case you didn't know this, that your Live Journal isn't really your site. By consenting to the terms of service, you lose some of the legal protections you would have if your blog really were on your own, self-hosted site. Once again, I'll wish you the best of luck. It seems odd ( ... )

"Grounded" is one of my all-time favorite Pavement songs. I remember buying Wowee Zowee the day it came out and then rushing home to hear it, only to find that the song I'd remembered loving from the advance copy of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain I heard once, but which was left off that record, had rematerialized in a slower and better form.

yeah its great. sorry man, i've had a rough week. funny... that's the excuse someone once gave me after punching me in the face.

i think wowee zowee might be my favorite. "kennel district" is probably my favorite on the album, which i find funny because its a spiral stairs song. have you seen pavement live?

It's my favorite album of theirs too. I wasn't one of the first people to latch onto the band, but I did buy Slanted and Enchanted right when it came out. My first show was in San Francisco in April, 1992. That was their second show there. Gary Young was still the drummer. I also saw him play with the band opening for Sonic Youth on the Dirty tour. I saw them a lot. My favorite concert may have been the one they played at the Great American Music Hall in S.F. right after Kurt Cobain died. Gary Young opened for them. And they did this extended jam where Stephen Malkmus seemed to be improvising lyrics reflecting on Cobain's death. He sang, "27 years old," over and over at one point. I'm pretty old, in other words.
