Cleanse

May 02, 2007 09:52

It's cleanse week! I haven't been super strict, as I have been eating wheat and drinking some wine but I have cut out meat, dairy, sugar, coffee, and processed foods. Here is the article I found two years ago that I based my first cleanse on. I do them periodically now. I also incorporate the Master Cleanser drink (hot water, lemon juice, Grade B maple syrup and cayenne) and drink dandelion tea throughout the day. I need to make a Kichadi for Thursday and I have a new detox drink recipe to try tonight. Recipes and my diet log under the cuts...

Kat's Beauty Detox Elixir

1½ cups cold water or aloe juice (aloe juice helps digestion and regularity)
1/3 cup of fresh parsley (alkalizing and detoxifying)
½ cup of fresh dark greens such as arugula, kale or watercress (Rich in detoxifying chlorophyll and enzymes)
1 inch wedge of cabbage (help heal the stomach lining)
1 inch piece of ginger, peeled (for enhanced circulation and digestion)
½ lemon, scrubbed but not peeled (alkalizing and tastes great, peel is rich in bioflavanoids, which make the fruit's vitamin C more effective)
½ small beet (for its blood-cleansing properties)
Pinch of cayenne or ¼ inch slice of a small jalapeño (a digestive aid)
2 tsp. xylitol (natural sweetener)

Bonus: Add a sprig of fresh herbs, such as cilantro (a great heavy metal detoxifier) rosemary, or thyme, for added cleansing and antioxidant effects.

Combine ingredients in a heavy-duty blender or juicer (reserve ½ cup of water aloe juice) and run for 15 seconds on a medium speed and then on high for another 15 seconds. Add remaining water, sweetener, and a handful of ice cubes, if desired. Process on high until the mixture is very thin - it will thicken quickly once the fiber expand and absorbs the liquid.

Cooling Kichadi

This dish is a potent blood purifier. Burdock clears the kidneys and blood, while the green beans act as a diuretic. A good one for summer skin break-outs, or excess water retention.

½ cup basmati rice
¼ cup split mung dal
½ burdock root (about 8 inches)
1½ cup green beans
2 tbsp ghee
½ tsp fennel seeds
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tbsp amaranth (optional)
1 stick kombu
6 to 10 cups water
½ tsp sea salt
1 tbsp coriander powder

Wash rice and mung until the water is clear; drain. Wash burdock root and peel it, then slice in inch slices like a carrot. Wash green beans, chop into one inch pieces.

Warm ghee in a medium saucepan. Add fennel and cumin seeds and saute for 1 to 2 minutes. Add rice and mung and saute for another couple of minutes. Put burdock and green beans in immediately after the rice and beans, stir saute for 1 minute. Add 6 cups of water and bring to a boil. Put kombu, amaranth and salt in once the kichadi has come to a boil, and reduce to medium-low heat. Cover and cook until tender, 1 to 1½ hours adding water as needed to keep the mixture moist. Before serving, add the coriander powder, stir well. Garnish with fresh chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves.
