The poem for my Grams

This is a special poem that I wrote to my grandmother before she died. I sent it via e-mail to her so that she would be able to read it before she passed away.

For Gran

On the day of my birth she was there
Looking over my mother her oldest daughter
With love and joy
She was a new grandmother

Grew up hundreds of miles away
Always looked forward to our summer vacation
One or two weeks at her house Mom and I would stay

With special trips to the Sharptown Carnival
Walking on the Ocean City board walk
Getting yummy Thrashers French Fries

The summer after I was 18
Walking on the same boardwalk without my mom
Joking about getting matching tattoos of ice cream cones

Special to me in so many ways
More than just a grandmother
She is a friend as well

Even though I am all grown up
And living a life of my own
I still look forward to the time I spend with my Gran
If not in person, or over the phone
I share time with her in my thoughts

When I was stung in the back by the bee
She was there to help take care of me
When I fell getting her summer flowers and sprained my ankle
She was there to take care of me

Now she is feeling blue
Not sleeping well
I may not be there to care for her in person
I am there in my thoughts and in her heart
