In Character Information
character name: Kenpachi Zaraki
Fandom: Bleach (manga)
Timeline: From between the defeat of Aizen and the return of the Shinigami into the Bleach storyline
character's age: Uknown, appearance is thirties?
powers, skills, pets and equipment: Super strength, he can cut down a building with one strike of his sword. Super speed capabilities that while aren't the normal shinigami shun-po, are very close in speed. He has ridiculous amounts of spiritual pressure that manifest as a death's head when fully released(when he takes the eyepatch off). It is strong enough that people who are intune with spiritual pressure and are not a lieutenant or higher are pushed to the ground by its sheer weight. The spiritual pressure can also be wielded as a sort of armor, weak attacks don't even touch him. It can also be used as a shockwave if provoked enough.
He's a master swordsman, which was learned on the basis of survival. He possesses a knowledge of kendo, which he was forced to learn by the Head Captain in order to officially join Gotei 13. Admittedly, he doesn't use that knowledge much but he does have it. He's also a master at hand to hand combat though has no formal training. That's all street/survival. He is also intensely durable, able to keep fighting after sustaining injuries that would cripple others. In short, the man is a tank but moves much, much faster.
He cannot sense spiritual pressure and cannot or perhaps will not communicate with his sword, meaning no shikai or bankai. It should be noted that he was able to pick Ichigo out as the most powerful of the "invaders" though his answer to this knowledge is that "he's just weird like that.
Equipment: Zanpakuto/sword. His eye patch that holds in his excess spiritual pressure. And bells for his hair. (I'm keeping the bells, dammit.)
canon history:
A history link appears! On his first visit to Scorched, Kenpachi was taken before he got to interfere in Huceo Mundo. Having been sent back, he gets to have all the fun of fighting the arrancar Nnoitra and Yammy, seeing Aizen defeated, and being yelled at for losing his Haori. Upon returning to Anatole, here's what he'll remember:
Arrival and the task of finding Yachiru in a new city, despite the both of them being - ah, directionally impaired.
Sparring with Priscilla without Yachiru's permission/as an audience
Making things up to Yachiru with the scooter
Yachiru being annoyed with him for being tiny/a kid though he remembers none of that
Dealing with the fallout of Riful vs. Pris through the eyes of Yachiru
Another bout with Pris, also dealing with the fallout of the Riful fight
A party, featuring "The Tie"
That wonderful dream of leaving, becoming head captain, and returning - too bad it was just a dream
Pissing off Byakuya throughout his whole stay, because he could
personality: He loves to fight. It has nothing to do with power, status, or revenge. He just genuinely loves to fight for the sake of fighting and getting stronger. By getting stronger I mean as a fighter, no political aspirations or noble reasons. Fighting/getting stronger is his main motivation in life. Fighting originally was for survival and still is, he just enjoys it. So much so that fighting and "him" are inseparable. Once nameless, he took control of his life and gave himself the name "Kenpachi" meaning "the strongest". More of, he took it by fighting the former squad 11 captain and killing him. He shaped his own identity for battle.
Kenpachi also shaped his outward appearance to be frightening - his spiked hair, numerous scars - and to give himself a disadvantage in battle - the bells that ring when he moves, the eye-patch to take away both sight and spiritual pressure. Where's the fun if the battle is easy? While he rarely turns down a fight, he lets his appearance do that for him, scaring away the weaker ones who take one look at him and head the other direction.
It should be noted that he is totally equal opportunity compliant. If you want to fight him, it doesn't matter what race, gender, age, or whatever. If you're interested, he'll go for it. Kenpachi doesn't really care about the boundaries society places on whatever subset. Girls can be just as strong as boys if not more so, old people can be terrifyingly strong and so on and so forth. Rank, as demonstrating by the whole Haori scene with Yamamoto. Kenpachi has shown quite the disregard to the whole haroi thing, shredding the arms to give it that signature tattered look. That wasn't done on purpose, he just got into a bunch of fights and didn't care about the clothing. Material possessions also don't mean too much to him. So long as he has enough food and a place
Manners...well, he doesn't have a lot of manners. Being so equal minded, he'll call you out on whatever stupid thing you just said or did with no regard to rank. He's upfront with his views and why shouldn't he be? Hiding and working in secret is for weak people. (And certain traitor shinigami.) He's not rude, per se, he just doesn't give a damn about your feelings. The type of feelings we're talking about are the "hurt feelings" and the passive aggressive things people do to one another. He doesn't put much stock and store into these things. He sees them rather on the level of how he sees Kido: they are for other people, people who aren't strong.
However, he is not the muscle-headed barbarian one would normally associate with the "Yay fighting!" mentality. He is shown to be quite insightful, border-lining on wise when he wants to be. Kenpachi provides some very interesting observations on the human condition (as according to Bleach, of course) in his fight with Ichigo and his dealings with his opponents. One could consider him a "street philosopher", learning more about the human condition than any academic by simply living/surviving.
Persistence is a fantastic quality of his as well. Both on and off the battlefield, once Kenpachi sets his mind to something he sticks to it. He keeps at his goals and puts his all into it. Just ask Ichigo - they fought once and Kenpachi's been itching for a rematch ever since and hasn't been doing so quietly.
The most interesting factor is his adoption and love for Yachiru. He, this blood thirsty creature, struggling to survive, finds her amidst the blood and carnage. He takes her in, noting that both are nameless and gives her the name Yachiru, after the only person he admires. She didn't fear him, or any of the bloody carnage that surrounded him and that struck a chord in him. They both share a fearlessness that borders on insanity and don't care. Since that time he became a father to her, passing down his battle ideology/philosophy to her and even relying on her for directions - though both have terrible sense of direction and get constantly lost. He usually gives into her whims but will, without hesitation, tell her what she's doing is stupid.
Overall, he's quite a complex character. A "battle maniac", a competent captain, a very strange wiseman and the best father in Bleach.
Why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting?
He's Kenpachi. He'd add a certain charm of ruined buildings to Anatole.
Writing Samples
Network Post Sample:
[The Forge clicks on with minimal difficulty, more to do with large hands than lack of knowledge. The distinctive scarred and eyepatched face of Kenpachi Zaraki, captain of the 11th squad shows up. He looks into the Forge with amusement.]
Heh. Guess I'm giving this another go then. Okay, fine. Things have been boring, anyway. [Fucking boring, even.]
So, how many of you are still here? [No, rephrase that.] How many of you are still here that can hold their own in a fight? [The implication that you'll be testing that boast against him should be obvious. And avoided if you are any sort of weak.]
I'll be waiting.
[He grins and clicks off the Forge.]
Third Person Sample:
Kenpachi, feeling no real need to hurry, ambled down the streets of Anatole. Odds were that he'd get lost in all the side streets anyway so for once there was no hurry. It wasn't like he was going to fight anyone or something. Best to just look and remember this place. It was really weird, not remembering any of this when he had gone back home, then returning here and remembering everything. And just how had Yachiru, Byakuya and a few others been here all this time when they were back home with him. Especially Yachiru, she never really left his vicinity...ever.
He grumbled and pushed those thoughts aside. This sort of thing of Kurotsuchi's business, not his. Fuck it. What mattered is that Yachiru was (relatively) safe. He had no idea who this Break person is but Yachiru could handle herself. She didn't hold the lieutenant position due to nepotism. Maybe she wasn't genetically his child but at heart she was definitely his. The fearless little girl, oblivious to all the death and violence around her. Kenpachi snorted in laughter. Somehow she'd been here for a year without him. He wondered how much damage she did while he was away. Knowing her, it was probably substantial. He looked forward to seeing how strong she had become. Speaking of...
He had so many new potential opponents! He'd been told there was a whole new set of people who came to this place. Think of how strong he could become, fighting against so many new and different fighters. From the looks of the place there should be plenty of strong people here. Many of the buildings that he remembers are just a touch haggard looking. Meaning that several are in ruins.
Or that he had managed to wander out into the ruins. Whatever.
Anything else? ...Anything else? :D
