In Character Information

character name: Kenpachi Zaraki
Fandom: Bleach (the manga!)
Timeline: Just before the start of the Hueco Mundo arc - before he gets to Hueco Mundo
character's age: Unknown, in appearance probably late 30's (or the shinigami equivalent - late 300s?)

powers, skills, pets and equipment: Powers: Super strength, he can cut down a building with one strike of his sword. Super speed capabilities that while aren't the normal shinigami shun-po, are very close in speed. He has ridiculous amounts of spiritual pressure that manifest as a death's head when fully released(when he takes the eyepatch off). It is strong enough that people who are intune with spiritual pressure and are not a lieutenant or higher are pushed to the ground by its sheer weight. The spiritual pressure can also be wielded as a sort of armor, weak attacks don't even touch him. It can also be used as a shockwave if provoked enough.

He's a master swordsman, which was learned on the basis of survival, with a vague knowledge of kendo, which he was forced to learn by the Head Captain in order to officially join Gotei 13. He's also a master at hand to hand combat though has no formal training. He is also intensely durable, able to keep fighting after sustaining injuries that would cripple others.

He cannot sense spiritual pressure and cannot or perhaps will not communicate with his sword, meaning no shikai or bankai.

Equipment: Zanpakuto/sword. His eye patch that holds in his excess spiritual pressure. And bells for his hair.

Pet: Yachiru?

canon history: Kenpachi grew up in the Zaraki district without a name, a home, a family, or a direction. He fought to survve and knew nothing else other than death. After one particularly brutal battle, as he sat among the body of his enemies, a small pnk-haired child came crawling out and touched his sword without fear. Something changed in him that day, for he took the child in and named her Yachiru after the only person he ever admired. He then named himself Kenpachi - "the strongest" and Zaraki, after the district he grew up in. He swore to get stronger, to keep fighting. Sometime later he encounter Ikkaku Madarame in battle and wins, refusing to kill Ikkaku. This refusal to kill him makes Ikkaku want to follow Kenpachi, in order to best him in battle.

His quest leads him to Gotei 13. Kenpachi fights the leader of Squad 11 and wins by killing him. He takes the captain's robe off the dead captain and claims it as his own. After that, Kenpachi runs Squad 11, with Yachiru as his lieutenant and turns the squad into "the battle squad" meaning everyone there is expected to love fighting and nothing else. He runs the squad in his own way and will only accept those who follow his "philosophy".

Kenpachi is actually introduced when he and Gin accost Byakuya, Gin to tease Byakuya about his sister's execution and Kenpachi to challenge him to a fight. It is here that some of that wisdom is shown in which he is able to correctly identify why Byukuya is letting Rukia be executed. The fight never somes to fruition as Gin drags a bound Kenpachi off.

Once the Ryoka infiltrate the Seireitei, Kenpachi picks the strongest one and goes off to find them. He uses information his third seat, Ikkaku who had previously fought Ichigo and lost, to find Ichigo so he could finally fight him. After much running around and getting lost due to his and his lieutenant's lack of navigational skills, he does meet and fight Ichigo. And for once, Kenpachi loses.

Despite Yachiru's insistence that Ichigo was "cheating" and "t was a two against one fight", he accepts the loss and vows once again to become stronger. To fight more. To finally beat Ichigo.

Due to this vow, Kenpachi ends up helping the Ryoka, mostly in his obsession with fighting Ichigo again. He even takes on two captains - Tousen and Komamura - at the same time (he originally wanted to fight their lieutenants as well, all at once, but they ended fighting Ikkaku and Yumichika - the 5th seat of Squad 11.) and wins. He is able to figure out how to defeat Tousen's bankai by letting it stab him so he can once again discern where Tousen is.

Though he is made aware of Aizen's betrayal, he does not go to the execution hill to try to stop him. Afterward, he remains mostly the same, with the addition of his need to fight Ichigo again. He comes to the human world in order to retrieve Hitsuguya's reconnaissance team with Byakuya. And he is supposed to go to Hueco Mundo to fight but the Door has better plans for him...

personality:He loves to fight. It has nothing to do with power, status, or revenge. He just genuinely loves to fight for the sake of fighting and getting stronger. By getting stronger I mean as a fighter, no political aspirations or noble reasons. Fighting is his main motivation in life. Though once nameless, he took control of his life and gave himself the name "Kenpachi" - meaning the strongest. He shaped his own identity for battle. He also shapes his outward appearance to be frightening - his spiked hair, numerous scars - and to give himself a disadvantage in battle - the bells that ring when he moves, the eye-patch to take away both sight and spiritual pressure.

However, he is not the muscle head one would normally associate with the "fighting mentality". He is shown to be quite insightful, border-lining on wise when he wants to be. Kenpachi provides some very interesting observations on the human condition (as according to Bleach, of course) in his fight with Ichigo and his dealings with his opponents.

The most interesting factor is his adoptation and love for Yachiru. He, this blood thirsty creature, struggling to survive, finds her amidst the blood and carnage. He takes her in, noting that both are nameless and gives her the name Yachiru, after the only person he admires. Since that time he became a father to her, passing down his battle ideology to her and even relying on her for directions - though both have terrible sense of direction and get constantly lost. He usually gives into her whims but will, without hesitation ,tell her what she's doing is stupid.

Overall, he's quite a complex character. A "battle maniac", a competent captain, a very strange wiseman and one of the better fathers in Bleach.

why do you feel this character would be appropriate to the setting? Canon is sooooooo survival based, especially his.

Writing Samples

Network Post Sample:[Static, squealing, terrible noises in general are sent over the network as someone who clearly doesn't know what it is attempts to use it. It finally, somehow, turns to video. The video spins round the room as the user turns the Forge this way and that. One would get the feeling that the user was less trying to figure out how to work it and more just idly playing with it. The viewer eventually sees a tall man, with a scarred face and eye-patch over his right eye. His hair, once in view, is in about 10 separate spikes, which ring every time he moves his head. The man looks at the Forge with a cocked brow. It's quite possible he doesn't realize there is a video function. It's more likely that he doesn't care.]

What is this? Some sorta whadjacallit?

The red light catches his attention and so does the lens. He considers it for a moment. He holds it to where he approximates the camera would offer the full view of him. Or, at least the most frightening view.

This is Kenpachi. I was supposed to be in Hueco Mundo but-

[But what? What actually had happened? A puzzled look crosses his face for a beat. He then relaxes into a "whatever" expression and moves on.]

Where am I?

[He furrows his brow. Something is missing. Make that someone.]

Yachiru?

[He gets up and looks around the room. It doesn't take long, as he takes up most of the room. Though the viewer is treated to the unusual sight of Kenpachi checking under the bed. Unusual because it's usually others that check under the bed for Kenpachi.]

She was right on my back...

[There is the sound of the door opening. More bells ringing, he's looking up and down the hallway.]

Yachiru!

[It echoes down the hall. He comes back to his previous seat. For now the Forge is ignored.]

Idiot got herself lost. Got both of us lost.

[He heaves a sigh. He finally speaks to the Forge with purpose.]

Has anyone seen a small pink hairded girl? She's named Yachiru. She'd have a zanpakuo on wheels and... [Thinks a little.] Are there any candy stores around?

[He gets up and takes the Forge with him. The screen goes black, not because he turned it off but because he put it in his haroi/hakama without turning it off. If anyone bothers to keep looking and/or listening, they'd hear footsteps, mumbled conversations, and fight challenges from Kenpachi. Eventually the Forge shuts off, either due to a screensaver mode or by Kenpachi hitting it by mistake.]

Third Person Sample:Kenpachi Zaraki was only a patient man because he had found with enough patience and persistence, he could get anyone to fight him. However, those few patience were wearing thin as he searched up and down the streets looking for Yachiru. She had, once again, gotten herself lost.

It all started because of the noble princess himself, Byakuya. He cursed Byakuya for even speaking to her over this Forge-thing. Now Yachiru was "so excited" to see him that she ran off to find where Byakuya lived. This wouldn't have bothered him so much but this was certainly not Soul Society. He wasn't quite sure what this place was. And yeah, the kid could take care of herself, to a point. Kenpachi would have been happier if she had just waited and they could have gone together. Besides, he needed to know where the royal pain lived as well, so he could finally force him into a fight.

People skittered out of his way as he stomped down the street, hunting. He didn't even give them a second glance. If they ran, they weren't worth his time to begin with. And he wasn't going to waste his time right now.

How hard could it be to find a small pink-haired girl?! His scowl deepened as he continued searching. Several people actually screamed and ran the other direction because they thought he was looking at them. Actually, pink wasn't the hard thing to find. He'd run into another pink-haired girl early, outside whatever building he'd woken up in. He'd seen her from a window and thought it had to be Yachiru - even in Soul Society, there was only one kid with bright pink hair. However, it wasn't. Apparently "pink" was a popular hair color in this place. The girl swore she would keep a lookout and let him know if she found Yachiru.

Whatever. He was getting bored by all these streets. They all looked the same and were all filled with people who looked the same. He was officially annoyed at this point. He could have been in Hueco Mundo, fighting off the Espada and teaching Aizen a lesson or two in power and battles. But no, this stupid "Door", whatever that was, took him and Yachiru to...here and he was missing out on all the fun. He could really go for a good fight right now. He glanced over the people in the street but they were all cowering. Not a good fight in sight.

Wait. That was it. Yachiru loved to watch hm fight. She wouldn't miss it for anything. Not even for "Byakushi" as she called him. He strode to the middle of a town square and ripped his eye-patch off. His spiritual pressure flared into the yellow death's head. Several people who'd been in the square fainted. Kenpachi gave a small laugh at that. How could these people even survive if they could handle this? Whatever. This was bound to get her attention. All he had to do was be patient.

Anything else? ...um <3? And I apologize right now for all the destruction he's going to cause. He is a one man wrecking machine.
