“Thanks for the update, Delta,” Carter replied as he slid into the co-pilot’s chair.

“Of course, Noble One, I’m always here to assist.”

Ass had just met seat when Kat turned away from the controls to ask, “Our team in the back too hot to handle, Commander?”

Carter instinctively felt his thumb and forefinger shoot up to pinch the bridge of his nose. He was sure that altercation was quiet enough, and far in the back enough for Kat to have missed it. Leave it to her to dial on his every movement and word.

“We’re running smooth, Kat” he assured her as his LCDR’s next words made him internally wince as he felt his balls being metaphorically crushed.

“Let me know if you want me to go back and take care of them for you, Commander.”

It could have been the way she always carried her voice, or the way she said ‘Commander,’ but as usual, with one short exchange, Noble Two had looked rank in the eye, laughed at it and then proceeded to utterly dominate it.

“Eyes on the skyline, Noble Two,” Carter strained as he was positive he felt the nose of the Pelican dive ever so slightly.

That’s about the time the beeping started.

“Tucker, I told you to leave the radio alo- !“

“That ain’t me, dude!” He heard Tucker yell from the back of the Pelican before everyone not standing right next to him had their voices drowned out by the wails of warning alarms.

“Kat! Status!” He yelled, punching the button to light up the emergency restraints light for the people in the back, even though they were most likely already fumbling with them.

“It's SWORD base, their AA turrets are taking shots at us!” That wasn’t Kat who said it, but York who’s helmet was illuminated in Delta’s red light.

Kat’s voice overtook the alarms as she yelled to Carter, “Commander we're going into a dive-!“

She didn’t even have time to finish when he went against basic logic and unbuckled from the co-pilots seat to beeline to the controls, gripping Kat’s hands in his as he tried to steady the controls, and Kat, in his grip.

When the left wing was shot off, that’s about the time everyone had it in their heads this wasn’t going to be a clean landing.

In the back, Jorge had everyone buckled down, Black-Two having had to leap across the Blood Tray to hold JD down when his harness failed. Over the alarms, over Carter’s orders, the last thing they could hear just before the crash was Emile calling out,

“I'm ready, how about you!?”
