Weeklyish Roundup, Lurgi Version

Apr 14, 2010 04:02

Lazy (but full) post incoming! So after getting back to the con I received that wonderful of traditional return-to-England gifts, the beloved man flu. A couple of days skimming close to maximum paracetamol levels and I'm still feeling kind of crap, which does make me wonder why I'm writing this at 2:30am. Descriptions might be a bit short, the selection definitely a bit weird thanks to my sporadic checking.

First up, though, you should probably check this video out, a solid preview of Project Diva 2nd showing off hold notes, direction buttons, and Miku On Guitar. (Sad to say, the Magnet dance looks suspiciously similar to the 'kind-of-eeeh' one done on 39s Live.)

To the rest of the videos!

(Crescent Moon Rider (40m), Miku, Pop Rock)
New 40m! If you couldn't guess that this was going to be near the top of the post, you may have just arrived and not quite gotten to grips with my musical taste yet. (Remember: I'm the one who likes stupid cheesy stuff.) 40m's latest is anime-pop-tastic, and doesn't carry the sheer breathtaking weight of Jenga - as such, it's definitely not going to be for everyone, but it's worth a listen if only because 40m is a highly classy individual.

(Dreamland (fatman), Luka, Angst Rock)
I am also graced by new fatman. Far and away my favorite Luka producer, I was highly up for listening to this, but something feels a bit off, like it's missing some of his usual quality - Luka sounds a bit rough in places, and I'm really not sure about the chorus, but maybe it's just because it's not really my genre, a track too slow and careful for my tastes to really click with it.

(Detective Loupe - Goodbye, Man of 256 Faces (bucchigiri), Len + Gumi + Miku, Chiptune Rock, PV)
I'm not even sure where to start with this. Half drama track, half chiptune, half rock track, half game music, this arresting track and accompanying amazing video chart the adventures of Len as a deerstalkered boy detective and Gumi as his 3d glasses wearing, dowsing-rod clutching assistant against creepy puppet Miku and Godot-visored Gakupo. If that doesn't entice you nothing will.

(The Night Before the Sakura (hoehoe), Miku, Rock, PV)
This startling track from hoehoe goes through a whole mishmash of styles, from music box and synth violin to soaring piano scales to rock that just slightly steps over the bounds into thrashy. Combine with a really stylistic video and some angst, and serve.

(Seed of Happiness (2010 Original Mix) (turuturu), Miku, Acoustic Pop)
A remix of the 2008 track of the same name, this has been sharpened up and made softer and really heart-warming. Pianos and bells and a fantastic crisp Miku, I dare you to get through the 4:05 crescendo without emitting an 'awww'.

(Forgotten Girl (peperon), Yuki, Coldplay Angst Pop)
Hey, how about that, a Yuki song I like. This is pretty angst-tastic while being slow and tuneful at the same time - I can just imagine R.E.M. or Coldplay listening to it and going 'come on, kid, cheer up, it can't be that bad' - but it's also a good match for a Yuki that sounds quite a good deal more palatable than many of her videos.

(I (rlboro), Miku, Rock)
Nothing out of the ordinary here, just a very solid straight-up classic rock track from Miku with some scorching guitar sections and a fantastic chorus.

(Angel Heiro (kiichi), Rin, Orchestral Rock)
Supplying this week's recommended level out of and out weirdness is this gothy, orchestral, possibly highly biblical rock piece. Catchy and wonderfully bizarre, though I had some problems with the rapidly changing tones and strangeness. On the other hand, Rin sure can sing Germanic languages.

(BeDash (fuamirokku), Rin, Chiptune Pop)
What's with the sudden chiptune fascination? Not that I'm complaining - I love the things dearly, happy bips and bops being wired pretty much directly to my enjoyment centres. This track has some problems with far too high notes and a kind of squeaky Rin, but is full of energy and more than unique enough to warrant a posting.

(Thoughts As Bright As... (ele), Miku, A--... Acoustic Dancepop?)
Not exactly a stellar example of uniqueness, but I found myself tapping happily along with this pleasant track that seems to want to be a fusion between your average Perfume-y dancepop and a mix of spanish and acoustic guitars with some Eurobeat thrown in for good measure.

(Pandora (akuseru), Miku, Pop)
My free allotment of cheesy not-terribly-popular-but-Stel-likes-it pop for this post, Pandora (initially translated as Bread Laying Around by my translation tools) is an enjoyable and slightly electronic pop track. It wobbles a little, but ends up on top on aggregate.

(Liquid Sound Revolution (mayuko), Rin + Len, ?!?!?)
Fair warning: I can't even get through all of this. If you're into the seriously freaky atonal stuff then this might be for you, this video is kind of like an electro scratch remix of Drain smashed into a slower version of Disappearance or something, with effects that are way, way over the top. I don't even know! I defer judgement to the audience.

(Screen Shot (No.D), Miku, Pop, PV)
I don't really like this, which is a great shame, as I think it showed a lot of promise and could have gone places. A really quite nice backing sound is kind of squelched under a rather flat Miku and a lot of elements that could have been utilised well but seem to go neglected. There's some fun toe-tappy moments, but ... eeh, well, see what you think.

(Hello Hello Ohayou (静野), Kaito + Teto + Sora + Momo + Defoko + Shizune, Easy Pop)
Coming in to round off the videos is the most unexpected link this week, a rough and unpolished UTAU group song with Kaito filling the lead, backed up by a new UTAU (anyone want to romanize that name for me?) and their adventures in mooning over each other while the others butt in. It's all kinds of adorable and I was really taken by it. Stick with it at least until 2 minutes when everyone else comes in.

Requisite Silly MMD Video

【MikuMikuDance】 STRATOSPHERE -Fine weather mix-(Rock ver.)【KAITO+Miku】

(STRATOSPHERE -Fine Weather Mix- Rock Ver. (utata), Kaito + Miku + Everyone, Rock, MMD)
This MMD video is scrappy and jerky and awkward and I don't care because it's also hilarious and awesome. Taking itself utterly over the top, it uses the Stratosphere Fine Weather Mix - a sort of rock/dance track full of summer-y crescendo - to drive an ever escalating series of badass events. Plane fly-bys! Rally driving! Rocking out on towers! Fast cars! Making out! Making out on fast cars! Silly dancing!
