Serenity: the Official Visual Companion

So I finally caved in and bought Serenity: the Official Visual Companion. Hee. Companion. Someday I may even stop finding that amusing. But that day is not today.

The book is very large and has glossy pages, and they are full of pretty pictures, most of which, I am happy to report, are of things other than River. There's a lot of fun backstory on the universe -- a description, written by Joss, which has some fun little details. There's a picture of some currency, and a small picture of a bunch of planets/moons with names, which could be helpful for fanfic writers. There's the standard bunch of interviews with Joss, plus fairly lengthy production memos on lighting, music, et cetera. All of this is about forty pages worth of stuff, which is more than I was expecting, and if it's the sort of thing you like, it alone might be worth buying the book for

The main part of the book is a shooting script, which I really enjoyed reading (more than I will probably enjoy the novelization) because I'm a dork. Strangely, not only were there scenes that didn't make it into the movie, there were scenes in the movie that must have been added later than this book went to press -- like, unless I'm misremembering where the scene takes place, Kaylee's line about vibrators isn't in there. (It was at the beginning of the Beaumonde stuff, right?) A fun thing about the script is that it gives you the English glosses of all the Chinese lines in addition to someone's "phonetic" rendition of them.

It looks like most of the scenes that were cut were all Inara's. I really hope those make it onto the DVD, because I for one would totally want to see more about the Companion Training House and Sheydra, because she seemed cool in the script. Plus, girl-kissing! Well, girl-seduction, in Companion training, but that's close enough, right? (I don't see why no one slashes Inara, dude...)

I think it was worth my $13 from Amazon.

Am watching Ginger Snaps now, and it's maybe a good thing Jen's not here 'cause there's no way she could watch this. Poor dogs.
