Sherlock 1x02: The Blind Banker

Yay!

Not quite as awesome as the previous episode, but still awesome. They have, thankfully, toned down the writing on the screen thing. On the other hand, Holmes didn't really get to deduce much, and what is he if he isn't deducing things?

As some of the fannish critical discussion is beginning to point out, this show could be doing a better job on race/class/gender issues. About the only thing they are at pains to tell you they're okay with is queerness (Watson's not gay! Not that there's anything wrong with that! His sister's gay!) -- but, really, guys? Going for Stereotypical Evil Asians already? Also, um, I was pretty sure the Maneki Neko was a Japanese thing, but I don't claim any special knowledge here.

I don't know if it's that the show just doesn't have *room* for anyone but Holmes and Watson, but really, what's with the female characters? I am really liking Mrs. Hudson but she doesn't seem to have anything to do except get them food. Last episode she had some good lines, but none here. (Maybe it's because the writer was not Moffat? I dunno.) I know, she doesn't do anything in canon, but, hey, she could. This is a chance, right? Similarly, Sarah started out so well but then ended up a damsel in distress. Bleh. (We were yelling "at least throw yourself over in the chair so the arrow doesn't hit you" at the screen.) And let us not even speak of Molly the mortuary woman.

This episode was generally less frenetic than the last one, which in some ways is good (less dizzying with the pacing and the chase scenes and whatnot) but on the other hand makes it more like your standard BBC mystery. Which is kind of bleh.

...I thought we only auctioned off artifacts whose provenance we knew? Yes?

I THINK WE ALL KNOW WHO M IS, PEOPLE. (Yes, of course: Molly. Bwahaha. I am totally with whoever on the community thought that one up.)

I don't think there was anything as out-and-out slashy as the previous episode, but the actors continue to have awesome chemistry. Which is awesome whether or not it is slashy.

So yeah. Good, could be better. *crosses fingers for third episode*

And now, bedtime.
