Last Saturday I watched
Barbs deliver a talk to the incoming Lit Majors and their parents. It was quite a speech actually! Along with organization and development, it was insightful without being esoteric and conversational without being folksy. What further floored me was the effortless delivery, no written speech but simply talking points in a notebook. Right before the talk I had told her not to worry, I would not be listening to her as I would be scanning the incoming majors to see if there were any cute ones. But honestly I found myself so agog over the speech that I listened quite intently (the fact that I was in the back also hindered me from spying any faces).
So taken was I with the speech that afterwards I wanted to take lit all over again... and have Barbs as a teacher. I never thought I would say that, ever.
That bubble soon burst though when a while later she told me that she sent students who forgot the reading for the day to detention.
