Question: Lighting mods and photo editing help

I hear a lot about lighting mods. What are they exactly and are there any that are easy to use?
Plus, are there any tutorials anywhere about how to do simple picture editing using Photoshop? The program scares me, but there's only so much one can do with Paint.
