Where am I!? And why am I in this handbasket?! anonymous May 19 2006, 18:31:15 UTC
Dear Jacob,

The truth of the matter is everywhere you go people will be close-minded. It's not because you remember obsecure facts about Star Trek, or keep an insane movie countdown, or any of those things. It's just because people don't often respect those who choose to follow their own path. People would rather be sheep.

And if some douche bag can't handle your infinite nature, then that's their problem. I have always hated how hard you are on yourself, you shouldn't feel as though you're stuck in a permanent hell and that you should apologize for not being a skank-banging drunkard-because unlike many people out there, you haven't compromised the things you love...and that's what makes you a good teacher, and is going to make you a good husband, father, etc. Think of every 'look', every insulting comment, as a job well done.

Bit by bit, you are ruffling people's feathers, and showing them there's a great big world out there...and it doesn't revolve around them.

And though I don't know what it's worth, every moment I spent with you in college (especially those during Astronomy) was well spent, even with your crazy knowledge of all things sci-fi. And the only time I've ever wanted to give you "the look" is when you've said things like you did in this journal entry.

Nerds have more fun.
