Been awhile, I know…

Lots of stuff has been going on. I forgot how heavy the schedule was once you get back from Christmas break. It seems like it’s been one festival after another and I’m constantly gone and unable to teach my classes. Now, don’t get me wrong, the occasional breaks are nice, but I really feel that I’m WAY behind where I should be at this point of the year. Especially with the younger kids…

Well, here’s a brief recap of what’s been going on this semester:

I don’t know if I ever talked about this earlier, but Meridian HS was the host school for our “All Area Choral Festival.” Basically, the whole month of January was spent finding parents to help out, figuring out dinner plans, contacting other schools, contacting a guest director, etc. Talk about a baptism by fire! Fortunately, I have SO many great teachers and parents that stepped up to help make the day a success. (No sarcasm there…I’m being serious.) In fact, on Monday, I was complemented by my principal on what a “fantastic job” I did with the whole event. Yea! Then I found out that Central A&M is hosting the middle school festival NEXT year. (Here we go again…) Well, on the bright side, it’ll look GREAT on my resume when I look for my next job.

At the end of January, I went to IMEA All-State. I had one student make it into the Honors Choir. I’m really proud of him. He’s really talented, but he’s stuck in a town / school system where he is incredibly under-appreciated and all of his accomplishments don’t mean anything to anybody because he doesn’t play a sport. It’s really a situation that could discourage a person, but he’s so upbeat about it and he never lets that stuff get to him. He’s really a joy to teach. I wish I had a choir full of him. But anyway, the festival. I saw TONS of Millikin people and had a great time catching up and hanging out with all of them. Though, the whole festival experience was a LOT different because I was chaperoning a student. I couldn’t just pack up and go do whatever I wanted. I always had to make sure that Carl knew where I was and where I would meet him and stuff like that. Now, I’m not saying that he was a burden or anything (because he wasn’t), but it was just a different experience.

Basically that’s what I’ve been up to. Now we have two festivals at Millikin in the next two weekends PLUS the Macon Co. festival PLUS Solo and Ensemble to be preparing for. I wish I had a few more weeks to get this stuff accomplished, but we’ll manage.
