Oh, where to begin…where to begin?
Let me just say how wonderful Thanksgiving vacation was. It sure was great to spend four days not thinking about school or about teaching or about how much I suck at teaching. I just relaxed and worried more about my ass growing larger as I filled up on turkey and stuffing.
But now, Thanksgiving vacation is over and I’m forced to go back to worrying about all that shit again. My high school Christmas program is on THURSDAY. No, I’m not kidding…our Christmas program is on DECEMBER 1ST. Why? Because Meridian HS is so obsessive about sports that there is a sporting event EVERY NIGHT from next Monday until we get out for break. That meant we had to schedule our program early. Well, we’re only doing two songs in each group, along with a song in the Jazz Choir, so I hope everyone is happy.
Speaking of the high school, three of my seniors may end up getting suspended this week. How, you may ask? Well, gather ‘round, my children and let me regale you with the details. Two Fridays ago, these three asked me if they could spend Homeroom in the gym. I asked if they had a pass and they said no. So I told them that they’d have to stay in the choir room. Well, I went into my office for half a second to grab some music and they were gone. I’m not allowed to leave the room unsupervised, so I was stuck. After homeroom ended, I ran down to the office and told the principal what had happened. He said, “Okay, here’s what we’ll do…on Monday, do the exact thing you did, but this time, I’ll be down there waiting for them. We’ll set them up.” So, that’s what I did. They asked again, waited until my back was turned, and then took off. I found out after class that they had indeed been caught and told if they were caught again, they’d be suspended (kind of a slap on the wrist, IMO, but better than nothing). Well, Tuesday came and went with no excitement, but on Wednesday, the girl (Ardith…nice name) comes up to me and asks to go to the bathroom. I told her she could go, but she’d have to leave her stuff in the room. She threw a fit, but finally submitted. She left the room and in about 5 minutes, came back and sat down. I figured I was safe, but tried to keep an eye on her. Well, she’s pretty tricky because when I looked up again, she AND the other two guys were gone again. After class, I ran down to the office to tell the principal, but he had left for a meeting and wouldn’t be back for an hour. I left him a note telling what happened. As I walked out, I ran into the Macon County Sheriff who patrols the school and he said he saw Ardith in the gym and asked her why she was there and she told him she “had permission to go to the bathroom.” Damn little bitches are tricksy, Precious. Well, I left THAT info in the note to the principal and hopefully they’ll suffer for it. Doubt it though…I can never be that lucky.
Then, down at the Middle School, I have 6th graders giving me every possible excuse imaginable as to why they’ll be unable to attend THEIR Christmas program on the 11th. Some examples include, “I have to go to band practice with my dad.” (WHAT?) “I have church to go to that day.” (Concert is at 2:00 PM…church doesn’t start until 6:30 that night.) “My dad won’t come watch me so I don’t want to be there.” (Okay, that one makes me sad, but not enough to not give them a zero.) “I don’t know where the high school is.” (Sigh…) I don’t know what the deal is…I’ve sent TWO notes home describing why the kids have to be at the concert, but these parents are super-retarded. At this rate, 5 kids will end up failing choir, and the choir will consist of 10 people. (Not exaggerations, I promise.)
Okay, I’m ultra-depressed again. I don’t want to keep typing so I’ll stop here and bask in my personal misery. Until next time…
