Dreamwidth & AO3

Apr 10, 2011 02:23

So, I have 11 Dreamwidth codes for inviting people. Ask and ye shall receive. It's kinda quiet, but it's getting more active all the time, and it's good to have a back-up.

Backing up there is easy. Once you have an account, just hit "organize" and then "important content". Poof! All your entries/tag/icons/comments are right there. It's maaaaagic.

A03, I have no invites, alas. But! They will totally send you one, if you have a valid e-mail address. It might take a couple of days (so do the dreamwidth in the meantime), but soon the AO3 will be available for all your fic needs. If you have fic that has no archive, AO3 is the archive for you. If you have multiple Pseudonyms that you don't mind linking? A03 is the place for you.
It's like FFN for grown-ups!
OH! And another cool thing about A03? They're trying to be an Archive For The Ages (note: not what they actually call themselves), so they allow you to upload a story, and then abandon it. So if one day you go "Oh crap! My homophobic/prudish boss now knows my internet name! I really don't want them reading my slash/porn! Maybe I should just delete it..." or "I wrote that? I really shouldn't have done that. I mean, people seem to like it, but I don't want to be associated with it anymore" then you can Orphan it on A03, which means that they keep a copy that's still findable in their archives, so new readers can still read it, but it no longer lists an author. It is a story made for the internets, by the internets (shush, I'm almost asleep, and I did this once but LJ ate it).
A03 also has a new feature that allows you track an author, and get alerts to when they update their fic on the site. So, if you love what a person has written, but they don't have a writing filter, and you really don't want updates on their day to day life (and face it, your flist is long enough as it is), you can go to A03 and read their fics there (caveat: providing that they're actually archived there. This is why you should poke your favorite authors until they upload fic there).

This attack that is limiting our access to LJ is annoying, but I firmly believe that LJ will not end because of it. In the mean time, back-ups are our friend, and it's always good to have multiple ways to find fic, just in case. Dreamwidth is kinda quiet, but getting more active all the time, and Yuletide is associated at least slightly with A03, which gives it automatic cool points.
