so september has ended and, just like green day wanted, my eyes have indeed been opened up. city year has been so amazing. yea the uniform sucks...my timbs are interesting for sure. but really, working with all the underpriviledged, special needs, and esl/immigrant youth is eye-opening and truly wonderful. so, i teach eight third grade environmental science classes and am in the process of starting an after-school program in a project/housing development. witnessing the violent and drug/alchohol infested way of life in the neighborhoods i work in makes me realize how important it is for us to be there. the children we work with crave attention in the worst kind of way. but without fail we are met with smiles and hugs and of course the tell-tale "hey city year!!!". nothing boosts you up as much as kids hollering adoration from a passing school-bus or the bright eyes of kids looking up at you as you pay attention to them and just them. we take our classes out as often as we can to the orchards and gardens planting years and years ago by the non-profit we work with, earthworks.
