Caged

Guy could remember the first days when zoos had started to appear. They had those little metal cages, the animals with a desperate, terrified look in their eyes as they paced back and forth, back and forth, non-stop for hours. People had ooh-ed and ahh-ed over the exotic species. Guy had hated them. No animal should be caged and he was caged now.

That stupid cop of Anonyme’s was “investigating”. Fuck investigating, they should be hunting. Some fae bastards had taken his friend and she wanted to waste time looking for evidence. Who the fuck cared about evidence? He had a scent, he could follow those bastards to the ends of the Earth with that. Once he got into their world though. The scent had stopped cold in the hallway outside Anonyme’s hotel room which meant the bastards who had take him, the ones who smelled oddly like goat, had disappeared into their world. Fucking fae bastards. They were always running away from fights.

Pacing the length of his hotel suite, Guy continued to curse every fae race he could think of until there was a knock at his door. A quick sniff told him Anonyme’s cop was back and she’d brought someone smelling of magic with her. He was more cautious when he opened the door, magic users were an untrustworthy bunch.

“Finally realized your investigation is a load of shit?” he asked, looking way down at the small woman his friend had taken up with this time.

“Guy Dennes, this is Harry Dresden. He’s a wizard,” the woman, Murphy, said without batting an eye at his comment. “He’s going to help us find Alan.”

“I can find Alan,” he snapped.

“Yeah? So what are you doing here instead of out there?”

He growled a little at her challenge, but she had a point. He needed someone to open the door between the worlds then he could go hunt. He stepped back from the door, letting them both in though he was still watching the wizard warily.

“I let Harry take a look at the scene,” Murphy said once she was inside and no longer had her back to him.

“I don’t give a fuck,” he cut her off and turned his glare on the wizard. “Open the veil and get the fuck out of my way.”

“Patience isn’t your strong suit is it?” the wizard asked sarcastically.

Guy took a step forward, hands curled tight into fists but Anonyme’s woman stepped in front of the wizard and glared hard at him. She didn’t scare him, but his friend would kick his ass if he did anything to her.

“Hey, I get you want your friend back but we don’t know what we’re up against in there.”

“Like I fucking care,” he growled.

“Maybe no one’s ever explained the concept of odds to you, but if we go in there and find this guy surrounded by an army, we’re not going to get close to him and we’ll all end up dead. That’s what they call a lose-lose situation.”

“We’re going to find out what took Alan and then we’re going to go get him. If you know anything, anything at all about what grabbed him you better tell us now before we leave to keep looking.”

He growled low and long making the wizard tense but Anonyme’s woman seemed to know he was just pissed at everything not her or the wizard. Well, he might actually be pissed at the wizard, that son of a bitch was annoying.

“Goats. Whatever took him smelled like fairies and goats.”

She looked at Harry who shrugged, “I’ll talk to Bob about it.”

“Fine, let’s go.” She fixed him with a hard look, “You stay put.”

“Or else, sugar?”

“Or we won’t know where to find you when we figure this out. Let’s go, Harry.”

And just like that they walked out. Guy listened to them talk about him while they walked towards the elevators. He waited until they were gone before he started pacing again. Fucking caged without bars.
