early goodbyes

As much as I gripe and groan about my students a lot of the time... I'm not ready to get say goodbye to them quite yet. That's not supposed to come until early June. But, today... I had an impromptu goodbye and a few raindrop tears that I couldn't avoid. This boy, his name is Ridge, is a most unique character. He has shoulder-length hair and dresses like Kurt Cobain. He's a big tree hugger and he is the laziest kid I've ever met... but a heart of gold, the only boy who habitually says hello to me everytime he sees me and thanks me for handing him a test with a perpetually failing grade (except for last week's, which he aced- ironically). I am just really sad to see him go, but he has better opportunities out in Cali with his aunt, he has had a crazy confusing and dysfunctional past six months. He'll have more opportunities, but what a neat, neat, neat kid. I feel bad that we made him cry as we all shared our favorite memories or personality quirks that he has in class. Fare thee well, Ridge, you were made for bigger things than Augusta County. Take care, kid.
