xii. Reflection
Prompt was: mirror

"That's new," House says, jerking his thumb at the latest addition to Wilson's office clutter.
"Not my idea," Wilson mutters, "And I'm on the phone."
House perches himself on the arm of Wilson's couch, and stares at his reflection in the antique, floor-length mirror. "You're always on the phone. Like I care."
Wilson snorts, putting his hand over the mouthpiece, "Lucky for you, she's got me on hold. What do you want?"
"World peace," is House's reply, a fingertip perched coyly on his chin.
"World domination, rather," Wilson says, "And stop trying to be cute, it disturbs my delicate sensibilities."
"You don't have delicate anything, much less sensibilities."
"I am a delicate flower, dammit," Wilson protests, just as the person he's talking to picks up the phone. Wilson flushes red, stammering, "Nothing, Mother, just talking to House."
There was arguing, and recriminations, most of which House tunes out. Something about anniversary gifts and being a good brother-in-law, but it isn't as interesting as his own reflection.
He hasn't really looked at himself in a mirror in five or six years, even before the infarction. He isn't sure why. It seems out of character, even to himself. An anomaly. Strange how he overlooks them in himself.
After a while, Wilson appears at his elbow, and House is struck by how natural they look together, how right. He's seen pictures of himself and Stacy, and they never looked so relaxed in each other's company.
Soft hand on his brow, Wilson trying to be funny, miming taking House's temperature. House takes those fingers in his, holding Wilson's hand still, within his own. To his credit, Wilson doesn't flinch, doesn't seem the least bit surprised by this turn of events.
House looks up, and asks softly, "How do you always know?"
There is no answer, just Wilson's lips pressed gently against his. House isn't even sure why he asked the question, or if it's the right question at all.
Wilson's tongue teasing gently at his bottom lip seems like answer enough.
Reflection never was his thing.
