Thinking

Now, to preface this, let me say that I am "in a traditional family structure."  So I am not saying it is wrong to be so.

I was reading this article though:

I would never have thought about it until you said it, but yes-- some of the objections to same-sex partners may be that there is no perceived power structure.

Heaven knows, my Dad (who is a psychiatrist and should know better) will still refer to gay couples like everyone else of his generation: speculation on which is the "dominant" one. I told him, "There doesn't need to be a dominant anything," and he readily agreed, but his knee-jerk reaction is still generationally-based.

I do think you see more of that expectation of deference by women in the South (also the Midwest). The East and West coast tend to be different from other parts of the country.

One of the things I've never liked is the side-effect of that model, which is that while women are supposed to defer to men and play up their egos and let them have all the power... no one much objects to them manipulation the hell out of those men. You know-- it's all right to run the show if you're not obvious about it! Always makes me think of Nancy Reagan...

I applaud you for trying to teach your children differently, especially against the grain of the culture around you. These things will change in time, but it's because of people like you that they'll change. The younger generations will grow older and bring that transformation with them. :)
