I've been doing a lot of staging recently and it's gotten me thinking about poses and animations and finding what works. I find myself continually flipping back to the same animations. Part of it is comfort zone, part of it is ease of use but a good part of it is that I know I can make them work because I've used them before

More often than not, I just use the animations from the game for conversations, and just let my sims interact naturally. If one of them needs to be in a certain mood, I mess around with the facial expression overlays from Decorgal's pose box (and I completely agree with Orikes about how versatile they make every other animation). I still use Ceedj's pose box a lot for facial expressions, too. You can also set sims up to talk in particular ways with that one, which is useful.
I tend not to use the physical animations as much, and will usually default to telling rather than showing if I need a sim to do something they can't normally happen in the game, like picking something up, jumping, climbing a wall, etc. If I do go there, I save it for a scene that wouldn't seem right without it. This saves me from having to pose every frame. (That said, I go through phases where I pose a lot more. It varies.)
