The Run for the Roses

May 03, 2008 18:22

Not many people know or follow horse racing anymore these days, but the Kentucky Derby and the other two races of the Triple Crown, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, are something I avidly watch. Today's race was marred by a horrible tragedy.

The favorite, Big Brown, won from the outside post, a feat unmatched since 1929. In the final stretch, he and the only filly to enter the race, Eight Belles, battled it out before Big Brown pulled out for a huge win at the end, with Denis of Cork coming in third. It was there, after that final stretch, that Eight Belles collapsed. She fractured both of her front ankles and was euthanized immediately on the course.

It was a good race; but what a tragic ending.
