AU Big Bang recs
Are people following the au_bigbang? Because I haven't really see much talk about it, but there was a pretty big turnout (ergo, I'm still working through it) and so far I've found some neat stuff in there.
Here are some things I've enjoyed:
Holy Clockwork Angels by ghostrunner7 {Supernatural - Ruby/Jo}
(16,000 words) Steampunk AU in which Jo’s still a hunter and Ruby’s still a demon, complete with airships, gaslight, Victorian costume fantasies, and clockwork... everything. In which Ruby and Jo have to save the world. Probably. // Lovely, subtle worldbuilding (a lot gets done in a minimum of words). I don’t think I've actually read any steampunk before, believe it or not, but this was neat. I loved their dynamic, the twist on the demons, how Bobby, Castiel, etc. were worked in. Glimpses of Winchesters at the edges... This is all very clever and a captivating read. Deserves so many more comments than it has! I hope more people find this one and let the author know we appreciate some SPN ladies fic.
Near Miss by shiplizard and beachkid {Dresden Files - Harry Dresden/John Marcone}
(42,300 words) A ‘what if Marcone didn’t rise to mob boss?’ AU. Parallels the first 3 Dresden Files novels. Harry POV that feels authentic. I loved this. “Three years ago, Tony Vargassi died and left his flourishing criminal empire to his son Marco. Gang violence is rife in the streets, but Harry Dresden's concluded, reluctantly, that it isn't his kind of problem. He's about to find out that the real power behind Chicago's throne is a lot worse then a spoiled mobster's son -- and maybe more than he can handle. John 'Johnny' Marcone is a mechanic with a bad limp and a bad history with Vargassi. He doesn't want to get back into the business of the Business; he barely escaped with his life the first time. But in Harry Dresden he sees enough raw power to save the city he loves."

Still Time For You by torakowalski {NCIS - Tony/Tim}
(21,600 words) High School AU. It's kind of like if Abby, Tim, and Jimmy had met in high school and then prodigy!Tim runs into CollegeStudent!Tony. Apart from the romance, Tim has some Navy issues. High school!Abby is adorable.
Small Town by ashinae and linden_jay {Sports Night - Dan/Casey}
(41,750 words) “Welcome to Port Bowmore, Nova Scotia. Population 700. Dan and Casey, roommates since college, co-manage the town's sporting goods store. Dan (who is not-so-secretly in love with Casey) spends most of his time hunting the local longshoremen. Casey (who is very secretly in love with Dan) is sleeping with Sally Sasser, the town's ambulance chasing lawyer. When Bobby Bernstein comes to town to recruit Dan for a GM position at SportChek in Halifax, Casey has to confront his feelings for Dan, or lose him to the 'big city'.” // If gay guy & straight best friend fall in love is your bread and butter, you'll be all over this. It's not names-pasted-on-yay, but you don't need knowledge of 'Sports Night' canon to follow this. (it'll add to your enjoyment, but it's not required) Great use of supporting cast. Dana, Natalie, Kim, Jeremy, Sam, Issac: all are awesome!
The Great Machine on Epsilon 3 by lil_utterance {Babylon 5/The Matrix - Susan Ivanova & Talia Winters UST}
(22,520 words) Babylon 5/The Matrix fusion. A very original crossover idea. It felt more like an extended prologue (seems like there might be sequels), but I still thought it was really interesting to see how the author combined the two sources. "Susan Ivanova is already living a double life: EA officer by day, rogue telepath smuggler by night. However, her life doesn't really become complicated until she finds out that everything she's tried so hard to hide is already known. The entire universe is changing around her; but she figures as long as thinks quickly enough and trusts no one, she might be able to keep up. At least until she realizes that everything she thought she knew had always been a lie, and that her secrets go even deeper than she had ever conceived.”
