Summary: A little 10 drabble inspired by my thoughts on the several almost-declarations of love. His thoughts during the end of the Bad Wolf Bay scene.
“Yeah, and how was that sentence gonna end?”
“Does it need saying?”
He wants to tell her but he can’t. It’s not him she’s going spend the rest of her life with. It’s not. She needs to hear it from the other him. The one who can allow himself to love her, and give her the life she deserves; the life she wants.
He could see it in her eyes, when she discovered the other him was human. That he could give her a human life; however they chose to spend it, he could give her what every other human had. And she was so happy. She wants that, and the Doctor loves her far, for too much to tempt her away from it.
“What about you, Doctor?”
He knows when she says his name to the other him that she’s beginning to accept him. That she’ll love him not quite the same as she loves him, but just as much.
He smiles as the other Doctor leans forward, and whispers those forbidden words. His heart breaks that it’s not him, even more so now he’ll never have the chance to tell her.
He turns and walks away, leaving them to their new life. And as the TARDIS de-materialises and he sees Rose watching him go, he thinks; ‘Oh, she knows’.
