Something for nothing...

Nov 07, 2007 19:46

I constantly watch the media looking for new ways to promote the band and sell the tracks. I watched this with immense interest to see the outcome.

Ah you're probably a little out of touch with our opinions on MP3's and downloads. I think the correct conclusion to be drawn from my original post is that if you give people a chance to get something for nothing that's what most people will do ( ... )

Aha - fair enough, I was going by the out of date main site.

Agree, if offered something for nothing, that's what people will pay for it.

Then again, of those who d/l the Radiohead album, how many would actually have bought it? I didn't d/l and wouldn't buy as they're not a band I'm interested in, but often I'll d/l stuff for free to have a listen, but if I really like what I hear I'll then but albums, have acquired a fair bit of Manowar, Hammerfall, and Rhapsody that way, and have subsequently bought 5 x Hammerfall, 4 x Rhapsody, and 1 x Manowar albums. I already had the music, but liked them enough to want to actually pay for it too.

"24k samples"

For the people with dial up you mentioned.

"Love Like Broken Glass"

A big German favorite and we couldn't get Sigil repressed in time due to cash flow problems and lending the last bass player the cash to afford the flight to go to Germany. So saying we lost out big time in sales and I figured the best I could do was put it on the German zine with 20,000 circulation. Seemed sensible at the time.

I know you feel there's a difference between a signed band and an unsigned one, but in these times I'm not so sure

That's called money, investment and exposure. Signed bands have someone constantly working to get them this rather than a couple of people in the band.

Soundclick

I'll look into that.

Aha - there is signed, and there is signed. Poss things are different if you sign to one of the majors, but being signed to a small label is much like not being signed at all, TBH. You might get a teeny bit more exposure in specialist and genre areas, but forget any kind of marketting budget.

Anyway, roll on Whitby next year! :-)

I think it's the extra people we'd have on board to do the jobs that we'd really benefit from.

(several aeons later) :-)

Ta for the detailed replies, sorry I didn't answer them at the time, it's that boody "life" thing, gets in the way all over the shop...

Fairy snuff about "Broken Glass", if it's big over there, go for it.

I'll look forward to seeing the new website too.

Btw, would you believe I've taken up playing drums? Not claiming to be any good at it, but decided it was now or never. Faye seems to like the results.

Cheers!
