Lost Humanity - [plot post]

While it wasn't a perfect solution, the substantiation technology that Enzan had gotten from the younger Enzan helped a great deal. With direct interaction with the real world restored, he no longer felt so cut off and alone. It was only during the times he was alone with Enzan that he missed his humanity the most ( Read more... )

Enzan was sitting at his usual desk. An elbow propped up on his desk and his forehead resting in his hand. Enzan hadn't been getting much sleep and so now and then he would accidentally fall into a snooze at work.

This was one of those times.

It didn't take long to find Enzan, since his desk was the first place Blues intended to check. When he saw Enzan dozing, he smiled faintly, though the expression was tinged with sadness. He suspected he knew the reason Enzan had not been sleeping well of late, but there was little he could do about it.

He walked up to his partner and placed a gloved hand on his shoulder, trying to wake him gently. "Enzan-sama?"

"I'm working, honest."

Enzan gave a little jump as he woke up. He blinked, trying to get out of the daze he found himself in.

He glanced over at the hand and then up at Blues. Enzan smiled faintly.

"Hi. Sorry. Reading sometimes puts me to sleep."

Blues chuckled. "There is no need to apologize." Then he allowed the smile to fade, turning more serious. "I wanted to ask you a favor, Enzan-sama. I would like to take a closer look at some code I am working on. Would you plug me into the network?" On the surface, the favor sounded simple enough, but it wasn't just a matter of plugging the PET in. Enzan would also have to stay awake and aware of Blues, to give him battle chips if he was attacked by viruses, and log him out in case of an emergency.

Enzan stared at the monitor for a little longer before finally sitting back in the chair. He swiped up the PET to look at Blues better, he forced a small smile to his face.

"Are you all right, Blues?"

Blues nodded, although the status reading on the PET would no doubt put the lie to this gesture. His code had definitely been damaged in the attack, and while the recovery chips were doing their best, they weren't powerful enough to fix everything.

"I am fine," he said. "Or I will be. I am more concerned with what that thing was and how it got into the system."

"It is strange."

Enzan hesitated then kissed his finger tips and lightly pressed them to the screen, "Let's get you fixed up and then take it from there, all right?"

Although he could not feel the "kiss," the gesture was still comforting and reassuring, bringing a faint smile to Blues' lips. "All right," he said.

It was at that moment that Dr. Hikari Yuuichirou poked his head in the doorway. "I thought I heard yelling," he said. "Is everything all right in here?"

"All right. I would like to keep working so we can figure this out quickly as possible. But,"

Enzan looked off to where Blues was being repaired, "If Blues wants to take a few days off, we'll do that."

"All right. Blues should be done repairing in a few minutes. We'll ask him then." Dr. Hikari turned back to the data that Enzan had brought him, studying it as the time passed.

True to his word, a few minutes later, the repair program beeped an indication that it was done.

"Go ahead and bring him out of sleep mode," Dr. Hikari said, gesturing toward the PET. "But don't unplug him just yet."

Enzan nodded and focused on the PET. He went ahead and pressed a button to wake up Blues.

"Blues?" He waited for a moment, "How are you feeling?"

Blues opened his eyes and looked up at Enzan. "A great deal better. Thank you, Enzan-sama." Noticing Dr. Hikari's presence, he added, "And you as well, Dr. Hikari."

Dr. Hikari smiled. "You're welcome, Blues. I'm glad you're feeling better."
