Lost Humanity - [plot post]

While it wasn't a perfect solution, the substantiation technology that Enzan had gotten from the younger Enzan helped a great deal. With direct interaction with the real world restored, he no longer felt so cut off and alone. It was only during the times he was alone with Enzan that he missed his humanity the most ( Read more... )

Enzan stared at the monitor for a little longer before finally sitting back in the chair. He swiped up the PET to look at Blues better, he forced a small smile to his face.

"Are you all right, Blues?"

Blues nodded, although the status reading on the PET would no doubt put the lie to this gesture. His code had definitely been damaged in the attack, and while the recovery chips were doing their best, they weren't powerful enough to fix everything.

"I am fine," he said. "Or I will be. I am more concerned with what that thing was and how it got into the system."

"It is strange."

Enzan hesitated then kissed his finger tips and lightly pressed them to the screen, "Let's get you fixed up and then take it from there, all right?"

Although he could not feel the "kiss," the gesture was still comforting and reassuring, bringing a faint smile to Blues' lips. "All right," he said.

It was at that moment that Dr. Hikari Yuuichirou poked his head in the doorway. "I thought I heard yelling," he said. "Is everything all right in here?"

Enzan stood up, still holding Blues' PET.

"I apologize if have I disrupted anything!"

He glanced down at Blues then back at Yuuichirou.

"Someone had tampered with some code Blues was working on. He got injured when looking into it."

"No, not at all," Dr. Hikari said. "I was just passing by and was concerned." He stepped into the room and went to look at the PET, hmming softly at the status readings. "I see. We should probably run him through a repair program. If you'll follow me?" He gestured toward the door.

"Yes."

Enzan nodded and smiled faintly to him. He turned and headed out with Yuuichirou. He had an idea of where they needed to go.

If the guess was Dr. Hikari's lab, then Enzan would be right. As soon as they were there, the scientist held out his hand, asking for the PET.

"Blues, I'm going to put you in sleep mode while this is running. The less activity within the program being repaired, the smoother and faster it should go."

Blues nodded. "I understand."

Enzan handed over the PET without any hesitation.

"Thank you." He gave a nod. "Is there anything I could be doing?"

Dr. Hikari took the PET and plugged it into his computer, then sat down at his desk and began pulling up the program. "Yes," he said to Enzan. "Copy the code that you said is responsible for this onto a disk and bring it to me. I'd like to examine it myself. Blues, I'm putting you in sleep mode now."

Blues nodded to Dr. Hikari, but his words were for Enzan. "Good night, Enzan-sama."

"Good night, Blues! You'll be up to speed again soon enough."

Enzan gave a nod to Dr. Hikari and left the lab and headed back to Blues' area. He snatched up a free disk and made a copy of the data.

Once he was done, he returned to the lab where Dr. Hikari and Blues were at.

During the time that Enzan had been gone, Dr. Hikari had already switched Blues into sleep mode and had started running the repair program. When Enzan returned, he took the disk and inserted it into his computer, loading the file in a carefully quarantined section.

"Hmmm," he said as he examined the data. "Yes, I can see where it was tampered with. However, the piece of code that attacked Blues is already gone. Most of what's left is just... I suppose you could call them its footprints. It altered the data here and here-" He pointed at the screen, indicating certain lines of code. "-so that it could blend in. Nothing that's left should cause any damage."

Enzan moved close and studied what was on screen.

"We need to track it some how. Find whatever it was or come up with some system so we will know when it comes back. It's dangerous. And since it was able to get here in the first place and hide, I am a bit worried what else it might be able to do."

Dr. Hikari nodded, finding Enzan's concerns more than valid. "I'll get to work on a tracer right away. My first guess is that it didn't get in by itself. Someone in the building might have slipped it in themselves."

"The question is, was this attack directed at Blues, or was he just the first person to run across this thing?"

"What?" Enzan blinked. The idea that possibly someone within ScienceLabs was behind this seemed strange.

"You think the person behind this could be someone here?"

"Possibly." Dr. Hikari didn't like it one bit, either, but if he was realistic, he had to consider the possibility. "Or it might have been a visitor. As soon as we can find out when this program appeared, I'll have to cross check who was in the building at the time. Perhaps we can even narrow down which terminal it was loaded through. That might help narrow the suspect list down. Hmmm."

"Tell me, Enzan, did the navi, or program, or whatever it was say anything about its intentions?"
