‘In the whole of the universe there are only two: the lover and the beloved.’
- Bhai Sahib

* * *

Soubi’s hand caresses down Ritsuka’s body, pale, elegant fingers against even paler skin. Leaning down to press an idle kiss against the younger boy’s collarbone, Soubi absently notes to himself that perhaps-one day-he would love to paint Ritsuka nude.

-

Love has been too cruel too many times to Soubi for him to ever believe in its small kindnesses. His body is littered with scars, white-on-white. They’re all faint now, but in the right lighting they’re blinding. Soubi’s heart, on the other hand, retains only scar tissue.

-

Ritsuka’s ears are silky as Soubi trails a tip against an edge. The texture is almost like velveteen, goosebumps marching along the elder’s skin as he continues to trace each ear’s outline. His fingertips are his body’s brush and as he touches, Soubi can almost imagine that he is painting Ritsuka, trapping the younger boy away in a painting. Paintings can’t be harmed, after all-they can only look beautiful.

-

He sleeps against Soubi: body pressed against the other’s, Ritsuka’s tail curls around Soubi’s waist-as if trying to keep the whole of himself close to his ‘lover.’ Soubi lies awake, dreaming of a dreamless sleep, seeing only butterflies. It’s now-with Ritsuka curled against him-that Soubi longs for oblivion.

-

Ritsuka is young, but he isn’t stupid. He sometimes wonders about Soubi-still wonders what type of person he is, how he came to be this way (for Soubi continues to guard his secrets jealously). However, he’s never doubted the look in the elder’s eyes. With Soubi’s hands against his skin, caressing his body, bringing Ritsuka to the height of ecstasy… Soubi is remembering someone else.

-

He knows that he is neither Beloved nor the Lover, for he is Loveless.
