What The World Eats. A Time photo essay showing 15 families from around the world and the amount of food they consume in one week. Looking at this made me cry. Sometimes in sadness because of the small amounts of food consumed by some of the families but also in happiness because of the joy shown by some of the groups in their photos.

I wonder if this is the same photojournalist that did something similair ten years ago or so. He would have families from around the globe pull out ALL their possessions onto their "lawns" and photograph that with the family members. It was an awesome photo essay.

This one is awesome as well! I knew Mexicans enjoyed Coca-Cola but egads! How many two liters was that? 50???!!! *hahahaha*

I need to get an atlas out. I had no idea where some of these countries even are. I guess the world has changed a bit since sixth-grade geography. :P~

Some thoughts of mine (in order, so if you'd like to click through the slideshow with me, dim the lights!):

#1/Japan: Surprises me that there are no cans of anything. Everything is in a package. My cupboard? Cans!Cans!Cans!

#2/Sicily: So. Much. Bread. (I'm not a big bread fan. Undine is!)

#3/Chad: Jesus. There's nothing there, but I see 6 people. Sad.

#4/Kuwait: Yup. Everyone is eating well there! I love the boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes & Ritz Crackers that are just popping up there!

#5/USA: Yup, cans. We're in America. I love how most everything on the left counter and up the wall is junk. Fast food is represented at the front right.

#6/Mexico: Damn, that's a lot of Coke! Those chilis look enticing. Hey! There's Kellogg's Corn Flakes again! Personally, I want to know what is in that big green dish and can I eat it?

#7/China/Beijing: OMG! That girl is CUTE! :-9~ I think it's funny that their favorite dish is pork w/ sweet sour. Which supports my theory that all stereotypes are not bad.... sometimes they are just because they are! (BTW, did I mention that girl was cute?!) Ha! I spy KFC & Hagaan Daaz! Enyi on LJ mentioned once that there are so many KFCs in Japan (yes, I know the photo is from China) that they forget it is American!

#8/Poland: Damn, this family loves their candy bars! (Me? Never touch the stuff.) :P~

#9/Egypt: Man, those green peppers are already upsetting my stomach, but I can just smell some deliciousness coming from the kitchen! Bonus points for the stuffed teddy bear at the back. I assume that is to carry explosives for a future suicide bombing. Why can't we all just get along? Why? I don't want to think that, but that's what happened. Aaarrrgh.

#10/Ecaudor: Wow. That's bare bones housing. Isn't this where they kept Hannibal in SILENCE? I love their smiles. So warm and genuine. This is a family that takes their hat wearing seriously.

#11/USA: Mmmmmmmmm, corn dogs. My kryptonite.

#12/Mongolia: one of my favorite waitress is from there! That is a lot of eggs for four people.

#13/Britain: OMG! They're going to eat that dog!!!!!!

#14/Bhutun: Again, not much food for so very many people. I love getting a glimpse at temple area. That rocks.

#15/Germany: IN GERMANY VE LIKE OUR PRODUCTS PACKAGED! BOTTLES! OJ! EVERYZTHING MUST BE IN A PACKAGE AND ORDERLY!

HEY - you stole my comment, Mr. Stealer-McSteal-Steal! That's exactly what I thought of the minute I read this post. The author, Helene Tremblay, is a French-Canadian and it was a good series - Families of the World - I think I read every one. It was amazing how little material goods some own and how much crap others have. She also lived with the family for awhile and told you what their average day was like. I think Miss Dee would enjoy them very much!

It's so fascinating to look at the variety of products. Juannie and I spent about fifteen minutes going through the pictures. I knew he'd be interested since he works in a grocery store.

The German family looks very dour. Not a fun group to spend the dinner hour with but things might liven up after a few beers. The Mexican family looks fun and certainly effervescent thanks to all the Coke. And I definitely want to meet the Ecuadorans. They look like an uplifting group.
