Nineteen Months + 2 Days

We are finally reaching the end of our long journey toward a normal house. We currently have the following pieces of furniture waiting for final assembly and/or placement: headboard, two bedside tables, futon, two stacking t-shelves, sofa, and armoire. Juannie repainted our bedroom ceiling yesterday which was the last step before starting to get everything in place.

We had to repaint the ceiling because we noticed while redoing the paint job on the windowsills and trim last weekend that the contractor left the ceiling all splotchy. We were, of course, not surprised by the shoddy work. Just another small setback because Juannie was planning to get the furniture set up yesterday but had to paint instead. What's one more day?

Now that we can move things back into the bedroom, the den will be freed up for the armoire, sofa and t-shelves. Then we will have room in the office to assemble the futon. I have my fingers crossed that we will actually be sleeping back in our bedroom tonight. Juannie's taking a nap break right now. I am actually too excited to rest plus I am about to get our new bedding in the wash so it's ready for tonight.

We had a busy morning dropping off my car for new tires, paying off our Saints season ticket balance, shopping for lamps and picking up the futon. The rest of the day will be devoted to getting all of this new furniture in place.

Thursday was the nineteen month anniversary of Katrina's landfall. If I had known then that we would still be dealing with getting our house put back together after this length of time, I would not have believed it would take so long.

In spite of the setbacks, aggravation, stress and disruption, I still feel lucky. We are in much better circumstances than so many others because we had a house that we could return to and live in during the renovation, we both kept our jobs and didn't miss even one paycheck, we got a reasonable and timely settlement from our insurance company, and we had the love and support of each other, family and friends (including LJ buddies) during this time.
