Am I totaly off base on thinking this is a reasonable stance towards communication on networking (or really any) message systems:

BBS SYSTEM X known habit of notifying everyones friends about all their comments to other people means BBS SYSTEM X will invite them into the conversation. Ergo, anything you say on BBS SYSTEM X(out side of a private message) is by definition a semi-public discussion with a standing invitation for peoples' friends to join in. So, knowing that whatever you say is visible as conversation to potentially hundreds of other people who know the person to whom you are talking it is on YOU to be CLEAR. Don't pop of online in a way you wouldn't in person and don't pop off in person in a way you dont want to be called out for.
