Summary: It’s the space race! Except Nick doesn’t buy it.
Notes: Canon. I’m undecided as to whether or not it will appear in a future chapter, so can be spoilery. The italicized text is from President Kennedy’s “To the Moon Speech” he gave in September of 1962 at Rice University in Texas.

Nick and Alice were seated on the sofa in the television room, Steven was at the chess table as usual, and Peggy and Nettie sprawled on the floor looking at their magazines while the evening news played on the set. It was airing part of a speech that the president had given earlier that day in SimTexas.
“We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy but because they are hard…”
Nick shook his head. “That’ll never happen.”
Steven looked up. “I’m not so sure, Dad. After all, both we and the Simviets have managed to put a man in space. How much harder can it be to put one on the moon?”
“The moon’s a far way away, and it’s not so much getting him there as it is getting him back safely,” Nick replied.
“Oh, I don’t know,” Alice said. “The president has put quite the emphasis on the space program. With those kinds of resources, I’m sure they’ll figure something out.”
Nick shook his head again. “The day a man walks on the moon is the day pigs fly.”
“It’ll happen, Dad. Maybe not before the end of this decade, but someday.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it,” was all Nick said in reply.
