In the spirit of not letting too much time pass without an update, have a few semi-random bullet points about things that have been going on with me!
- DragonCon. This was a lot of fun, although I feel that I was not particularly successful with panels or celebrity-related anything this year. Of the four panels that I did go to, I had about a 60% success rate, I think. Tea dueling was excellent fun, women in science and tech was amazing and wonderful and life-affirming, the fannish Outlander panel I tried annoyed me so much I walked out halfway through, and the Fury Road panel was excellent EXCEPT for the moderator (AR). Thanks for nothing, moderator. Oh no, wait, I guess thanks for getting me onto fail-fandomanon? Yeah, whatever. Anyway, the rest of that panel was awesome, and the speakers are to be commended. As for the rest of the weekend, I spent the vast majority of it hanging out with friends that I don't see anywhere near often enough, and that was wonderful. I also spent one evening closet cosplaying Agent Peggy Carter, and that was a lot of fun. Maybe next year I'll get my act together in time to pull off a few ideas I have for other characters (including one from Dragon Age). We'll see.
- Family stuff. This is a mixture of wonderful and not. Things are going very well for my sister and brother-in-law, and I am super excited about various movie and TV-related things happening with them. They have poured heart and soul into the work that they love for over a decade now, and if anyone deserves success, it's them. On the flip side of the coin, my mother's long-term care insurance company ended up denying the claim we filed, so now I'm in the process of filing all the paperwork for a formal appeal, arguing the challenge line, calming both my parents down, and figuring out how we're going to continue to pay for everything in the event that I lose the appeal. (A lawsuit would be the next step, but I need to talk to a lawyer in this field first.)
- Work stuff. Going well! Extremely busy, more than usual, especially as I am currently acting in a six-month leadership role as an interim director in my organization (in addition to my previous/usual work). It's a fabulous opportunity and one that I am very excited about, but it's also a whirlwind of activity. Although, that said, I am actively trying to do better about work-life balance so that I leave work at work when I'm not there. So far, so good; but wow am I behind on some things as a result. Still, I think it's a good way to avoid burnout and thus continue to enjoy the work I love, right?
- Life stuff. Also going well. Talia continues to hang in there, I am slowly getting my house in the kind of order that I want it to be in, I rejoined choir and it's going well so far, I am having fun with my Fitbit and friendly competition there which hopefully will lead to me really stepping up the physical activity so that I can get back into skiing this winter and run a marathon in the spring, fall is in the air, and my social life has taken an unexpected and delightful twist. Onward and upward.
I think that's enough for one night, and given that it's after midnight I should probably try to get some sleep before dawn surprises me. I hope all's well with all of you, too. ♥
