something not-quite-impulsive, but definitely new

I've been thinking, and in some cases talking, more or less seriously for some time about getting a tattoo. I'd picked a location (on my body, I mean) and settled on a design - or at least a visual element that I really wanted in a design, because it was meaningful to me. The next logical step was to choose an artist, right?

I wanted to find someone who had at some degree of experience with the type of design I want, or who at least had a good deal of it in their portfolio. After reviewing a lot of different galleries for artists in the area, across 10 or 15 different establishments, I decided that method wasn't working. Instead, I did my next level of searches with keywords describing the artistic style in combination with things like "tattoo" and "tattoo artist." That worked, enough that I was able to narrow it down very quickly to three people. I looked at the first site and was like, "... well, that's really a lot of skulls there...;" looked at the second and was like "okay, nice, very nuanced art of this other kind but at least he does some of what I'm looking for, maybe, this could work," and then loaded the third site and stared in delighted awe. I spent the next hour looking at specific examples and reading about the artist and her studio, her vision and her background and her relationship to the city where she lives, etc.

And that, my friends, is how I ended up booking an appointment in early June, over a weekend -- with an artist who lives in Southern California.

At least it should be a nice mini-vacation?

(I almost can't believe I'm really doing this, but at the same time, it feels right. Now, here's hoping that it doesn't hurt too badly. Whee?)
