Today's running-related discovery: my current "comfortable" pace is another half-minute faster than I thought it was in my last post. I am within range of my minimum desired pace before starting distance training, which is about a month or so sooner than I thought I'd be there.
All of this goal-related discussion reminds me that
muji asked about the importance (or not) of New Year's Resolutions. I think this differs rather a lot from person to person, but I consider them to be an important part of my year. Year's end brings a sense of closure (even if it's semi-artificially imposed), and I like to use it as a time to both look back over the previous year and look forward to the next one. New Year's resolutions are a part of that growth process for me; they help me not only identify specific things which I would like to improve, but also to form a strategy for doing just that.
That doesn't mean that I always succeed at them; far from it. I think they're best considered as aspirational and challenging. Even the ones I don't manage to accomplish end up teaching me something valuable, and in the end that's one of the most important things about them.
