running and reading

Jan 15, 2014 23:21

Today is 15 days into the new year, and so far I have kept all of my resolutions, every single day. Optimism is high.

One thing I've discovered is that my pace per mile is much faster than I thought it was. After last weekend, when I found that what I thought was a slow pace was in fact a minute faster than what I had believed my average was, I stepped up to the next notch on the treadmill (another half-minute per mile faster) -- and was able to maintain it. That's the good part. The downside of that little experiment is that I now know what it feels like to be running on a treadmill when the belt suddenly decides to twist and buckle underfoot. I guess I can consider it practice for trail running? (Next up on the task list: find a repair person or learn how to readjust belt tension settings and calibration myself.)

Anyway, I'm up to 19.45 miles so far for the year, and so far I'm pleased with my progress. More news there as I have it.

I've seen people doing "Reading Wednesday" posts for a while now, and it seems like a fun thing to try. So, on that note....

What I just finished reading: Two things, both of which were rereads. The first is Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon, which is the second in the Outlander series. I really like that series, and I particularly enjoy the historical setting combined with excellent character development. I started rereading because the next book is due out in the spring, and I wanted to be freshly up-to-date. I've also just found out about the TV series in production, and am very much looking forward to it.

The second reread was Brazen Virtue, by Nora Roberts. La Nora tells a good story in both the romance and mystery/crime genres, and this was a combination of the two. It's one of her older ones, but it was nice to revisit it.

What I'm reading now: I'm about halfway through Voyager, which is the next Outlander book, and also about halfway through Zen to Done, by Leo Babauta. It's a variation on organizational and time management strategies, with a mindful approach.

What I'm reading next: Good question. I expect I'll continue on through the Outlander series until I'm done and ready for the newest one. I also have a Paul Farmer book that I've been meaning to pick up, so maybe I'll do that for my next nonfiction book.
