As part of my morning routine, I load my newsreader and email lists and check up on all the various news items that have come in overnight.
This morning I was greeted by this headline:
Notre Dame, Catholic institutions sue Obama over contraception mandate.
Okay, I thought. Not good, but not entirely unexpected either, given the way the policy winds are blowing.
Then I read the article.
On Monday, the Archdiocese denounced the mandate for not providing an exception for some Catholic institutions, such as hospitals or schools, because they serve and employ non-Catholics and do not primarily strive to "inculcate religious values."
"Catholic institutions of the Archdiocese of Washington, including its schools and social service ministries, do not qualify as religious and the mandate forces them to provide coverage for drugs and procedures that we believe are morally wrong," Archbishop Donald Wuerl said in a statement.
Emphasis mine.
I literally cannot parse the intended logic in this. No, seriously, y'all, I can't. Maybe I just haven't had enough caffeine yet, but -- if the argument is that Business X should be exempted from the mandate because Business X is not religious, then how can one argue for an exemption based on religious moral grounds?
I can't even. It's not even 10 AM and my day is filled with WTF.
